The Tower of Pisa is the freestanding bell tower, of the cathedral of the Italian city of Pisa. Facts About Tower of Pisa The tower's tilt began during construction, caused by an inadequate foundation on the ground. Construction was subsequently halted for almost a century, because the republic of Pisa was almost continually engaged in battles with Genoa, Lucca, and Florence. The tower took a total amount of 185 and 195 years to build. The use of limestone is the reason why the tower has not cracked and or broken- the rock is flexible enough that it can withstand the pressures placed on it. Facts About Tower of Pisa The tower is estimated to be 55.86m (183.27 ft.) in height and its estimated weight is 14,500 metric tons. There are seven bells, one for each note of the musical major scale. The leaning Tower of Pisa had been closed for reconstruction in 1990 and was then reopened. Dec 27, 1233 The worker Benenato, oversaw the continuation of the construction of the bell tower. February 23, 1260 Guido Speziale architect, was elected to oversee the building of the Tower. April 12, 1264 The master builder Giovanni di Simone and 23 workers went to the mountains to cut marble. 1319 The seventh floor was completed by Tommaso di Andrea Pisano. 1655 The largest bell had been installed. 1990-2001 The tower has been restored, to repair visual damage, mostly corrosion and blackening.
