PROLOGUE
Clothes is one of human needs besides food and shelter. As
humans, of course we need clothes to keep our body clean and
comfort.
Clothes itself has various kinds according to the type of model,
the use and where it came from. And also, clothes has its own aesthetic
value on each kind.
Hanbok is a traditional clothing
from Korea or also commonly called Joseonot by Korean people. All ages and class can
use it. But there are differences in colors and
patterns of each class in the past.
HANBOK
Traditional clothing of Korea is called “Hanbok”, which
came from the words Han and Bok.
• Han (한) stands Hanguk (한국) that means Korea.
• Bok (복) that means clothes.
So, Hanbok is clothes of korean.
Hanbok usually made using collaboration of bright
colors, harmonious and elegant, with beautiful lines and
no pockets. Usually used for formal and semi-formal of
party or traditional festival celebration, such as chuseok
(Korean’s thanksgiving day).
One of the fundamental aspects of the Hanbok are simple lines but
beautiful. A Japanese master, Yanagi Muneyoshi (1889-1961) said
that the main characteristic of Korean’s art is beautiful line.
Besides the line also symbolized by woman’s hair and of course
silhouette of Hanbok.
In Korean, the word texture or gyeol not
just mean fabric wave or a naturally
occurring form, but it also means wisdom
and sanctity of Korean woman. And
Korean expressing texture through lines
that flow naturally in Hanbok, their
traditional clothing.
In the past, Hanbok coloration used natural
ingredients. Such as red from red petals, etc.
The form of Hanbok that
narrow at the top but wide at the
bottom. The top part fit with
body size so it looks elegant and
the bottom part is flexible, so it
increase the elegance of the user,
also to hide user’s bottom body
part.
White
-White is the most common color and usually
used by ordinary people. It’s symbolizing
purity of the soul.
Red
-Red means good fortune and wealth, so it
usually used by bride.
Indigo
-Indigo means consistency. It used for skirt
color of woman in court and as official color for
robes of court staff.
Black
-Black is a symbol of infinity and is the source
of creation. Used for the color of man’s cap.
Yellow
-Yellow means center of the universe. Used for
oversized clothing of royal family. Ordinary
people. Ordinary people usually prohibited to
use yellow.
Parts of Hanbok
A. Jeogori
The top part of Hanbok. For
guy, the size is bigger and the
style is kind of simple. While
for woman is shorter and kind
of curve and has a soft
decoration.
If Jeogori is short sleeve, it’s
called Baerae.
B. Deongjong
Deongjong is white collar of
Hanbok.
C. Otgoreum
Cloth (ribbon like) that knotted on Hanbok, also to tie up the
Jeogori . The function is as button substitute.
How to knot The Otgoreum :
1.
Devide the cloth-ribbon-like into two
sides. The left side (A) and the right
side (B). Put (A) above (B).
2.
Make (A) go around (B) and then pull it
up.
3.
With a length approximately 10 cm,
fold (B).
4.
Make (A) go around again (tied up).
5.
Pull it up and then neat it.
D. Sokbaji
Underwear which has a form
like pants.
E. Sokchima
Underwear which has a form
like skirt.
F. Chima
Skirt on Hanbok. There are so many
kind of Chima, such as single or double
fold.
G. Beoseon
Socks.
H. Pattern
Composition of design, lines and blend of colors.
I. Kkotsin
Name for shoes that made from
silk.
J. Durumagi
Outer that worn to warm our
body when winter.
Men Accessories
Cap that used with robes official.
Cap that can used by everyone in any-clan.
Winter cap that used by men and woman
to hide our forehead, neck and ears.
Woman Accessories
Jokduri
Crown that complete the bridal
dress.
Hwagwan
Crown to complete bridal dress
but looks more luxurious than
Jokduri.
Jobawi
Woman’s winter cap
Dwikkoji
Accessories for woman in Joseon
Dinasty.
Daenggi
Ribbon that used to tie and to
decorate long hair.
Hanbok also has so many kind of type, such as Hanbok for
royal family, royal servants, noble, wedding, mortality, kids till the
modern ones.

- Daily clothes of
King.
Hwangwonsam
- Daily clothes of Queen.
Wedding Hanbok
Usually called Hwarot. Generally has pattern and contrast
color, more luxurious and with complete accessories.
Modern Hanbok
had been changed a lot of lines, but it keep the typical
elements. Such as otgereum (cloth that ribbon-like on
jeogori).
