唧唧复唧唧，木兰当户织。
(Click click and click click), Mulan was weaving near the door.
bù wén jī zhù shēng wéi wén nǚ tàn xī
不闻机杼声，惟闻女叹息。
Suddenly, the shuttle sound stopped, only the sounds of her sighs could be heard.
wèn nǚ hé suǒ sī
wèn nǚ hé suǒ yì
问女何所思，问女何所忆。
Her parents asked Mulan what was in her mind and what was in her heart.
nǚ yì wú suǒ sī
nǚ yì wú suǒ yì
女亦无所思，女亦无所忆。
She replied that there was nothing in her mind or in her heart.
zuó yè jiàn jūn tiě
kè hán dà diǎn bīng
昨夜见军帖，可汗大点兵，
Last night she saw the draft list because the emperor was calling for soldiers.
jūn shū shí èr juàn
juàn juàn yǒu yé míng
军书十二卷，卷卷有爷名。
There were 12 rolls of military lists and every one of them had Dad’s name on it.
ā yé wú dà ér
mù lán wú zhǎng xiōng
阿爷无大儿，木兰无长兄.
Dad does not have a grown son and I do not have an older brother.
yuàn wèi shì ān mǎ
cóng cǐ tì yé zhēng
愿为市鞍马，从此替爷征。
I wish to purchase a horse and a saddle, then take father’s place in the war from then on.
《木兰诗》是中国南北朝时
期的一首北朝民歌，选自宋
代郭茂倩编的《乐府诗
集》，在中国文学史上与南
朝的《孔雀东南飞》合称为
“乐府双璧”。《木兰诗》
讲述了一个叫木兰的女孩，
女扮男装，替父从军，在战
场上建立功勋，回朝后不愿
作官，但求回家团聚的故
事。热情赞扬了这位奇女子
勤劳善良的品质、保家卫国
的热情和英勇战斗的精神。
