I will know, understand and be able to perform
all classroom procedures and expectations.
I will learn the basic ideas and concepts involved
in reading poetry, plays, and Shakespeare.
Copy the previous two objectives in your
notebook. Then answer the journal question.
Journal: What is conflict? What is struggle? What
conflict or struggle have you experienced?


I hate the word / As I hate hell, all
Montagues, and thee. / Have at thee,
coward!”
What is the conflict? Who are the characters
involved?

The conflict established here is the hateful
feud between the Capulets and the
Montagues. Tybalt and Benvolio are involved
in this fight, but the conflict involves all the
members and servants of both families.

A foil is a character who helps bring out
certain qualities of the main character.
Batman and Alfred, or Frodo and Sam are
some examples. Therefore the foil is Alfred
or Sam. They are the foils of the main

Romeo is completely absorbed in thinking about
love before he meets Juliet; he is in despair
because the object of his desire has rejected him.
Juliet, who is only 13 years old, has apparently
given little thought to matters of love and
marriage until her mother bids her to consider it.
Both are smitten with love when they first meet.
Romeo and Juliet equal each other in their witty
verbal exchange, and both seem comfortable
with touching hands, kissing, and letting each
other know their feelings during this first
encounter.

Lady Capulet: Well, think of marriage now.
Younger than you, / Here in Verona, ladies of
esteem, / Are made already mothers.

Lady Capulet wants Juliet to marry Paris, but
Juliet has not really thought about marriage
and shows little interest in Paris. Juliet, Lady
Capulet, and Nurse are involved in the
conversation, which involves Paris.

Romeo has met and fallen in love with Juliet
and has just discovered her identity. She is a
Capulet and he a Montague, so their
relationship is ill-fated from the beginning.
Romeo is talking with Benvolio (FOIL). The
conflict mainly involves Romeo, Juliet, and
Tybalt, who represents the Capulets.

Why is Romeo worried about going to the
Capulet party?

He has had a dream that some terrible event
will begin at the party.

Why has Montague been worried about his
son, Romeo?

For many days he has been crying and
locking himself in his room wrong.

Describe the reactions of Juliet’s father and
mother when Paris proposes marriage to their
daughter. How are their opinions the same,
and how are they different?




Juliet’s father thinks Juliet is till too young to
marry, but Juliet’s mother thinks she is old
enough
Juliet’s parents both think that she should have a
say in whether she wants to marry Paris or not.
Juliet’s mother is more eager to put forward
Paris’s suit than Juliet’s father is.
The mother urges Juliet to look favorably upon
Paris; the father encourages Paris to look
favorably upon all the young ladies at the
festivities, not just Juliet.




Juliet’s mother and the nurse agree Juliet is
old enough to be married.
Tybalt’s FOIL is Capulet.
When Tybalt first tells Capulet that Romeo is
the son of his enemy Capulet tells Tybalt to
ignore Romeo.
Romeo confides to Benvolio that he is in love
with a beautiful woman, but she has rejected
him.
