“Reading for pleasure is the most important
way to advance literacy attainment in children.”

“Children who know adults who read
for pleasure take it for granted that
reading is a valuable and worthwhile
activity”

 The library is a magical place, inhabited by a cast of invisible
people who conduct their lives off stage, yet when
introduced to us can transform our world forever.
A child in Australia without books at home has the possibility
of being set on a reading path, at least during the primary
years, by a dedicated teacher librarian.

Reflecting on Today’s Books:
Ten Trends with Print Books
1. The Rise and Rise of the Picture
Book/ Multi-Modal Texts….
And the Expansion of its Subject
Matter???
2. The Rise of the Book Trailer
3. Comic Books Thrive
While they have no armor, weapons or gadgets, comic books possess
super strength when it comes to persisting through a declining market.
The digital age has acted like kryptonite for many forms of print media,
yet comics continue to sell to an ever-growing audience. And it’s not
that print comics are simply surviving — they’re thriving.
“Comics are the one medium so far where print sales have gone up,”
Brian Hibbs, owner of Comix Experience, said.
4. Visual Literacy Emphasis
Visual literacy is important in multiple ways:
•
Teaching visual literacy helps kids better interpret art and visual media that they come in contact
with.
•
Visual literacy allows a deeper interaction with texts of all kinds and introduces the process of
analytical thinking about representation and meaning.
•
There is evidence that, even for older children, examining and understanding how art and text
interact may allow readers to "visualize" while they read--a key to proficiency in and enjoyment of
reading.
•
By teaching "educated perception" of artwork (for instance, how certain techniques elicit specific
emotions or effects) you can teach children how to be more skeptical and informed viewers of all
visual media, including advertising.
