What is Service Learning? Service • Service is when you help someone or a cause because you want to! No one pays you or gives you a prize for helping. Service Learning is • investigating a problem in the community • learning something new to help solve the problem • taking action working on the problem by using what you learned Service Learning at Blackhurst and Lincoln School 2012 • Last year Project Read and Reach students discovered one of the biggest problems in the world is the earth’s environment is in danger!!! • People waste many things and then throw them away in the trash. There’s too much trash and not enough space to store it all. • If we are not more careful, we are going to use up all of the Earth’s natural resources like metals, trees, and oil! . PRR Investigated this problem! PRR students wanted to find ways to protect the earth. • PRR Kids found one way to help is to recycle trash that can be used again. This saves natural resources and energy! PRR Students Investigated • They read books. • They watched videos to learn about the 3Rs: Reduce-Reuse-Recycle! PRR Went on a Field Trip • PRR visited Recycle City to learn where our recycling goes and how these materials get used again!! Guest Speakers PRR invited guest speakers to talk about how recycling works and can help the environment . • PRR Kids learned once an object goes to the landfill, it is gone FOREVER!! How does Recycling Help? • Over half our trash can be used again or recycled and made into something new. • The energy saved in recycling a single aluminum can could power a television for 3 hours!! • Recycling paper saves millions of trees from being cut down to make new paper! • When people help the earth’s environment, this is called “Going Green!” Students Plan and Prepare • The Project Read and Reach students decided they wanted to make a difference in our school by teaching everybody ways to “Go Green” . • They made an action plan to organize a schoolwide recycling program . • Lincoln School became the first school in St. Charles to recycle everything single stream!! PRR Goes Green and takes action! • PRR made “Did You Know?” presentations in morning assembly about the 3 R’s: Reduce-ReuseRecycle. • They worked as a team to make their “Go Green Recycling” video to show others. Click here to see our video! PRR Kids had Jobs!! • They asked everyone at school to help recycle everywhere in the school. • Each classroom got a blue recycling bin. • The PRR Kids did recycling bin pickup for the whole school for 18 weeks! Taking Action! • Students even made art works out of recyclable materials to keep trash out of the landfill! Reflection • The boys and girls wrote and drew pictures about their “Go Green” project in their journals. • The kids talked about how they liked having jobs to do! • Students tried “Going Green” at home! CELEBRATION!!! In the end, the PRR Kids celebrated keeping 1,458 pounds of recyclable materials out of the landfill!! Great Job!! Go Green News Update!! • Since Single Stream Recycling was so successful at Lincoln School last year, the entire school district will be Going Green! • All schools in St. Charles School District will be using single stream recycling to Reduce – Reuse – Recycle For the 2013-14 school year!! Project Read and Reach Kids were a big part of making this big idea happen!! When the Go Green service learning project was over…. • How do you think the “Go Green” service learning project changed the PRR student’s lives? PRR will be looking for new service learning projects for 2013 Remember Service Learning is • investigating a problem in the community • learning something new to help solve the problem • taking action working on the problem by using what you learned Service Learning at Project Read and Reach • We will begin on our first service learning project in a couple of weeks. • Big problems usually take time. We will work on our service learning project for many weeks. Our first Service Learning Project… Emergency Preparedness!!
