ATHEY ARE ALL USED TO INFLUENCE YOU TO DO SOMETHING. ATHEY ARE ALL EXAMPLES OF PROPAGANDA. What? To persuade you to: • Buy something • Think something • Do something Messages used to persuade you to believe something or to do something. • Corporations • Government • Individuals How? •Commercials •Packgaging •Billboards •newspapers •Speeches •Stores •Internet •Everywhere!! There are 5 techniques for using propaganda that we will learn. 1. The first type of propaganda is: BANDWAGON This technique tries to persuade everyone to join in and do the same thing. Bandwagon works because it makes you think « everyone else is doing it » and so should you. Why is this an example of BANDWAGON? What other examples of BANDWAGON can you think of? 2. The second type of propaganda is: LOADED (EMOTIONAL) WORDS Using words that will make people feel strongly about someone or something. Loaded (emotional) words work because they make you feel a certain way. What is the LOADED WORD in this ad? What other examples of LOADED WORDS can you think of? 2. The third type of propaganda is: TESTIMONIAL Using words and images of a famous person or expert to persuade. Testimonial works because you feel you can trust the words of an expert or someone who is famous. Who are you supposed to trust in this TESTIMONIAL? Who is the expert in this TESTIMONIAL? What other examples of TESTIMONIAL can you think of? 2. The fourth type of propaganda is: TRANSFER Using images to bring up strong feelings (positive or negative) in order to persuade. Transfer works because you transfer the happy feeling you associate with a picture to happy feelings about a person or product. • What feelings does this picture represent? • What product are we supposed to transfer those feelings to? • Even though Coke has nothing to do with Christmas, we are supposed to transfer the happy feelings of Christmas to the product. What other examples of TRANSFER can you think of? 2. The fifth type of propaganda is: REPETITION Using repeated messages or pictures to persuade. Repetition works because you remember things you have seen more than once. How many times is the product repeated in this picture? What other examples of REPETITION can you think of?
