Mame Khan – Folk and Sufi Singer Mame Khan – Music Diamond of Rajasthan Mame Khan belongs to a family of master singers, who perform a unique oral tradition since more then fifteen generations. His vibrant and soulful voice owe much to the influence of his late father Ustad Rana Khan. Mame Khan has travelled the world with his unique Folk and Sufi composition, which are deeply rooted in the desert of Rajasthan. He belongs to the Manganiyar community from Rajasthan and his musical journey started in a small village called Satto, in the heart of the desert – West India Rajasthan. From Europe to Africa from America to the Gulf Countries, Mame Khan has always put a spell on his audience, taking them on a soul journey into music. Today he is also well known for his Coke Studio @ MTV performance with Amit Trivedi and his Bollywood movie songs in Luck by Chance, No one Killed Jessica, I am and Goray Gondogol. In the beginning of 2014 he won the prestigious “Music Diamonds of Rajasthan Award”. The members of Mame Khan´s ensemble include some of the fines Folk and Sufi artist from Rajasthan, India. They play the old, traditional and almost extinguished Rajasthan instruments such as Kamaycha, Sharangi, DoubleFlute, Morchang and Karthal. The Manganiyars The Manganiyars Belonging to the Muslim faith, but supported by the patrons, belong to the Rajput desert clans, the Manganiyars sing the praises both of the great Sufi saints and of the god Krishna. These splendid virtuoso musicians combine the popular mystical and secular traditions of the desert with those of the courts of the maharajas. From childhood the music is heard and imbibed along with their mother's milk. The music is an indispensable component of functions such as weddings, engagements, and births. There is an uncountable number of songs for such occasions. There are also many songs associated with planting and harvesting. In these activities the villagers routinely sing of their hopes, fears and aspirations. Nowadays the musical performances of the Manganiyars ranging from traditional village settings to the biggest stages of the world, are in high demand not only because of their unique voices and instruments but non the less because they move the audience form greatest, deepest joy to tears of happiness. Folk and Sufi Music from the Thar Desert Mame Khan sings a fine blend of Folk and Sufi music in is very own musical style. He brings together the traditional Manganiyar instruments from the Thar Desert and age old lyrics based on oral tradition. Many of these instruments are a rare specialty from Rajasthan and hardly known any more.
