• Before we begin to learn about these two citystates and the Wars that affected them, it is
important to look back at the geography and
political difference of the two:
– Sparta is located in the Peloponnesian
Peninsula between the mountains and the
sea
– Athens is located in central Greece, only
four miles from the Aegean Sea
– While Athens was developing through trade
and democracy, Sparta was building a
strong military city-state and an oligarchy
