Smith wrote vivid accounts of life in the early colonies, which attracted many settlers to move to Virginia. Bradford & Winthrop wrote more seriously, reflecting on “their role in God’s plan for a better society. Equiano recounted his capture and brutal treatment, offering readers insight into the life of a slave.
