Analyze the elements of this paragraph – Mark up the text with your colored pencils In 1955 Claudette Colvin, a 15-year-old African-American girl, stood up for her rights. According to the text, “Claudette could sit only in the ‘colored’ section of the bus. When the colored section was full the ‘White-only’ section was empty, Claudette had to stand.” In other words, no African American was allowed to sit in front of or next to a white person. The author describes one day when all seats in the colored section were full, Claudette sat in the white-only section. When the bus driver told her to move, Claudette was arrested and taken to the jail. She bravely decided to stand up for herself as well as others around her. This incident took place just a few months before Rosa Parks refused to move to the back of the bus. Perhaps Claudette’s courage helped Rosa Parks in her act of courage.
