TU-ES COMMENT? WALT: Recognise words and phrases to describe myself and other people WILF: • To be able to write a sentence saying how tall I am for a Level 2 • To be able to use “agreements” when describing other people accurately for Level 3 Copy this title – “SAYING HOW TALL I AM” Copy the following phrases into your books in French and English “JE SUIS GRAND” “JE SUIS GRANDE” = “I AM TALL” “JE SUIS PETIT” “JE SUIS PETITE” = “I AM SMALL” “JE SUIS DE TAILLE MOYENNE” = “I AM MEDIUM HEIGHT” READ THE NEXT SLIDES CAREFULLY AND FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS… DO YOU REMEMBER IN THE LESSONS ABOUT “PETS” AND “COLOURS”, WE LOOKED AT THE KEY WORDS “MASCULINE” AND “FEMININE”? – (IF NOT, IT MIGHT BE A GOOD IDEA TO GO BACK TO THAT LESSON AND HAVE ANOTHER LOOK!). WE LEARNT THAT ALL NOUNS IN FRENCH ARE EITHER MASCULINE OR FEMININE. WE SAW THAT WE HAD TO ADD AN “E” TO THE ADJECTIVES (DESCRIBING WORDS) IF WE ARE DESCRIBING A “FEMININE” WORD. (WITH SOME SPECIAL EXCEPTIONS AS WELL!) HERE IS AN EXAMPLE FROM THOSE LESSONS…. UNE ARAIGNÉE VERTE THE WORD “UNE” TELLS US THAT THE WORD IS FEMININE AN “E” IS ADDED TO THE WORD FOR GREEN BECAUSE THE WORD FOR SPIDER IN FRENCH IS FEMININE ADDING THIS EXTRA “E” FOR FEMININE WORDS IS KNOWN AS AN “AGREEMENT” – OR YOU CAN ALSO SAY THAT THE ADJECTIVE MUST AGREE WITH THE NOUN. WHEN WE ARE DESCRIBING PEOPLE WE MUST ALSO MAKE SURE THE ADJECTIVES AGREE. DID YOU NOTICE IN THE FIRST SLIDES OF THIS LESSON THAT THE WORDS FOR TALL AND SHORT IN FRENCH HAD AN EXTRA “E” WHEN DESCRIBING THE FEMALES? THE WORDS “GRAND” (TALL) AND “PETIT” (SMALL) ARE ADJECTIVES SO THEY AGREE WITH THE PERSON THEY ARE DESCRIBING. WHEN WE DESCRIBE PEOPLE, FORTUNATELY IT IS OBVIOUS IF A PERSON IS MASCULINE OR FEMININE! BUT WHAT ABOUT THE PHRASE FOR DESCRIBING SOMEONE WHO IS MEDIUM HEIGHT? THAT WAS THE SAME FOR BOTH MALES AND FEMALES WASN’T IT? THIS IS BECAUSE OF THE WORD “TAILLE” WHICH MEANS “HEIGHT” OR “SIZE”. IT IS A FEMININE WORD, SO IT DOESN’T MATTER IF YOU ARE DESCRIBING A MALE OR FEMALE, IT IS THE WORD, NOT THE PERSON WHICH IS FEMININE. THIS CAN BE A BIT CONFUSING. ASK YOUR TEACHER TO EXPLAIN IT AGAIN IF YOU ARE NOT SURE. SO FAR, WE HAVE LEARNT PHRASES TO DESCRIBE OURSELVES. THESE ARE THE KEY PHRASES WE HAVE USED SO FAR… “JE M’APPELLE” = “MY NAME IS” “J’AI” = “I HAVE” “JE SUIS” = “I AM” NOW IT IS TIME TO BE ABLE TO DESCRIBE OTHER PEOPLE. THESE ARE THE PHRASES YOU WILL NEED… WRITE THIS TITLE IN YOUR BOOKS – “DESCRIBING OTHER PEOPLE” COPY THE FOLLOWING KEY PHRASES INTO YOUR BOOKS IN FRENCH AND ENGLISH “IL S’APPELLE” =“HE IS CALLED” OR “HIS NAME IS” “ELLE S’APPELLE” =“SHE IS CALLED” OR “HER NAME IS” “IL A” = “HE HAS” “IL EST” = “HE IS” “ELLE A” = “SHE HAS” “ELLE EST” = “SHE IS” SO “IL” MEANS “HE” AND “ELLE” MEANS “SHE”. THIS WILL GIVE YOU THE HELP YOU NEED TO MAKE SURE THE ADJECTIVES YOU USE WILL AGREE. THE NEXT SLIDE WILL SHOW YOU HOW TO USE THESE KEY PHRASES… DESCRIBING A MALE PERSON “IL S’APPELLE STEPHEN FRY. IL A LES YEUX BLEUS ET LES CHEVEUX BRUNS. IL EST GRAND” THIS MEANS – “HIS NAME IS STEPHEN FRY. HE HAS BLUE EYES AND BROWN HAIR. HE IS TALL”. (NOTICE THE AGREEMENTS. THE EXTRA “S” IS ADDED TO THE COLOUR WHEN DESCRIBING THE EYES AND HAIR(S).) DESCRIBING A FEMALE PERSON “ELLE S’APPELLE KYLIE MINOGUE. ELLE A LES YEUX BLEUS ET LES CHEVEUX BLONDS. ELLE EST PETITE” THIS MEANS – “HER NAME IS KYLIE MINOGUE. SHE HAS BLUE EYES AND BLONDE HAIR. SHE IS SMALL”. (NOTICE THE AGREEMENTS. THE EXTRA “S” IS ADDED TO THE COLOUR WHEN DESCRIBING THE EYES AND HAIR(S). THE EXTRA “E” IS ADDED TO THE WORD FOR “SMALL” BECAUSE KYLIE IS FEMININE. NOW IT IS YOUR TURN…. MAKE YOUR OWN POWERPOINT PRESENTATION TO DEMONSTRATE WHAT YOU HAVE LEARNED TODAY. FIND PICTURES OF YOUR FAVOURITE CELEBRITIES ON GOOGLE AND WRITE A DESCRIPTION IN FRENCH USING “IL” AND “ELLE” AIM FOR 5 SENTENCES CORRECT FOR A LEVEL 3. USE THE EXAMPLES OF STEPHEN FRY AND KYLIE MINOGUE TO HELP YOU. USING AGREEMENTS CORRECTLY WILL HELP YOU ACHIEVE A LEVEL 3.
