(DESCRIBING WORDS) IF WE ARE DESCRIBING A “FEMININE” WORD. (WITH SOME
SPECIAL EXCEPTIONS AS WELL!)

AN “A” IS ADDED TO THE
WORD FOR PELUDA
BECAUSE THE WORD FOR
SPIDER IN SPANISH IS
FEMININE
THE WORD “UNA” TELLS US
THAT THE WORD IS FEMININE
ADDING THIS “A” FOR FEMININE WORDS IS KNOWN AS AN “ AGREEMENT ” – OR
YOU CAN ALSO SAY THAT THE ADJECTIVE MUST AGREE WITH THE NOUN.
WHEN WE ARE DESCRIBING PEOPLE WE MUST ALSO MAKE SURE THE ADJECTIVES AGREE .
DID YOU NOTICE IN THE FIRST SLIDES OF THIS LESSON THAT THE WORDS FOR TALL AND
SHORT IN SPANISH WERE DIFFERENT WHEN DESCRIBING THE MALES AND THE FEMALES?
THE WORDS “ALTO/ALTA” (TALL) AND “BAJO/BAJA” (SMALL) ARE ADJECTIVES SO THEY
AGREE WITH THE PERSON THEY ARE DESCRIBING.
WHEN WE DESCRIBE PEOPLE, FORTUNATELY IT IS OBVIOUS IF A PERSON IS
MASCULINE OR FEMININE !
BUT WHAT ABOUT THE PHRASE FOR DESCRIBING SOMEONE WHO IS MEDIUM
HEIGHT? THAT WAS THE SAME FOR BOTH MALES AND FEMALES WASN’T IT?
THIS IS BECAUSE OF THE WORD “TALLA” WHICH MEANS “HEIGHT” OR “SIZE”. IT IS
A FEMININE WORD, SO IT DOESN’T MATTER IF YOU ARE DESCRIBING A MALE OR
FEMALE, IT IS THE WORD, NOT THE PERSON WHICH IS FEMININE.
THIS CAN BE A BIT CONFUSING. ASK YOUR TEACHER TO EXPLAIN IT AGAIN IF YOU
ARE NOT SURE.
