MUNAJAT AL-TA’IBEEN WHISPERINGS OF THE REPENTERS TALKS BY: DR. M SHOMALI 15th May 2012 WHAT IS MUNAJAAT? It is the whisperings. When someone is close to you, you don’t shout, but you whisper. Allah s.w.t. is closer to us than ourselves, and so we whisper to Him. Prophet Musa a.s. asked God, “Are you distant when I call upon you or are you close to me, so that I whisper to you,” Allah s.w.t. replied: “ I am close to the one who remembers me” Engaging in communication with Allah s.w.t Prayers are read in such a way that one can hear the words read by the person. Prayers is also form of whisperings. Hadith by Allah s.w.t.” When they become close to me, I whisper to them, the chosen ones.” Therefore; it’s a mutual communication. God communicates in His own way. Munajat is Intimate and private. Munaajat can also be whispered in congregation. But in essence, it is done in isolation, its between you and your God. Gems from Ma’sumeen a.s. Apart from Salaat, which is formal kind of ebadat. 4th holy Imam Zaynul Abedin a.s. was given this particular task by Allah s.w.t. He lived in a time whereby he taught people through the culture of prayer, supplication and whisperings. The only form of guiding the people after the tragedy of Karbala was through du’as and munaajats. When we speak to God, we don’t need anyone to be with us, we can do it when alone or in congregation. Du’as from Imam Zaynul Abedin a.s. It is universal for of prayers to reach Allah s.w.t. MEDINAH – the city of the Holy Prophet s.a.w. and other ma’sumeen a.s. were buried there. Even these sacred cities were not free from prohibited forms i.e. singing, music. 4th Imam showed different forms of duas and supplications for different circumstances. Sahifa-Sajjadiyah Sahifa Sajjadiya is a collection of glorious prayers by the 4th Imam a.s. Dua Abu Hamza Thumali is not part of Sahifa Sajjadiya. The 15 whisperings are also not part of the Sahifa Sajjadiya. There are many more psalms of the Imam. The 15 whisperings Munaajats Munaajat Al-Taaibeen. Munaajat Shaakiin Munaajat- Al Shakireen Munaajatul Arifeen and many more. They are like different stations, depending on your condition, you can whisper and talk to God. How can we engage in Munaajat- Al-Taaibeen, whisperings of the repenters? Analysis of Munaajat Al-Taaibeen The first station from the many stations. Manzil or stations, coming down from your previous manzil. Spiritual journey, has different stages, stations. Station of Tawbah, one should be aware of tawbah, acceptance of tawbah, and achieve as much as one can. Khaja Abdullahi Ansari mentions these stations from Manaazilul-Saaireen. Station of Tawbah Some say that the 1st station is awakening, and some say it is the station of Tawbah. Remove the darkness of sins, unnecessary weight that we have carried (burden of sins) before we can embark upon the spiritual journey. Tawbah should not be postponed. Times of tawbah, i.e. Friday night, during the month of Ramadhan, or when it rains. Station of Tawbah Ask for forgiveness at all times but in sincerity. Real feeling of remorse from the heart. To stop committing sins and not to repeat. Allah’s mercy encompasses our negligence. Even the likes of Firon and Yazid could seek tawbah, and they were taught how to repent, but they were not given the tawfiq of doing tawbah. To feel despaired is the worse sin One who has no hope in Allah, shaytan would have more strength to put him in the ditch. Are we truly asking for forgiveness? Are we true to ourselves? From the munaajat al-Taaibeen “O Allah the mistakes have clothed me in the garment of my lowliness….” When we commit sins, we loose our honour within my self. My own self esteem will be damaged. A noble person would not do evil, due to the respect for himself and honour. Respect for ones’ self is very important. From this munajaat, we understand that we become separate from God, due to our lowliness. God is not far from us, it is we who are distant from God. Glimpses from the whisperings of the Repenters O Allah, Revive my heart through repentance… It is Allah s.w.t who revives our heart to be able to repent to Him and go back to Him. It is through His tawfiq, that we can go back to Him and confess our sins. God is my Hope, God is my want, God is my wish, God is my aim. Everything else comes under this. “O Allah, the one who doesn’t have you, what does he have, and the one who has you, he has everything” Dua Arafah by Imam Husayn a.s.
