novo?

Hyper-V news
New features… (1)
• resize virtual disk
• you can resize virtual disk while the virtual machine is running
• storage QoS
• specify the maximum and minimum I/O loads in terms of I/O operations per second
(IOPS) for each virtual disk in your virtual machines
• shared virtual disk
• multiple virtual machines to access the same virtual hard disk (VHDX) file, which
provides shared storage for use by Windows Failover Clustering
• can be hosted on Cluster Shared Volumes (CSV) or on Server Message Block (SMB)based Scale-Out File Server file shares
New features… (2)
• virtual machine generation
• Generation 1 – same virtual hardware as in previous versions of Hyper-V
• Generation 2 – provides new functionality:
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
Secure Boot (enabled by default)
Boot from a SCSI virtual hard disk
Boot from a SCSI virtual DVD
PXE boot by using a standard network adapter
UEFI firmware support
IDE drives and legacy network adapter support has been removed!
only WS 2012/R2 & Windows 8/8.1 (x64) supported as guests!
New features… (3)
• export running VMs
• you no longer need to shut down a virtual machine before exporting
• extended Hyper-V replica
• forward information about changes that occur on the primary virtual machines to a
third server (the extended Replica server)
• the frequency of replication, which previously was a fixed value, is now configurable
• you can also access recovery points for 24 hours (previous versions had access to
recovery points for only 15 hours)

Virtual Machine Manager
& App Controller news…
What’s new in VMM? (1)
• Virtual Machines and Clouds
• support for Gen2 virtual machines
• differencing disks
• live cloning of virtual machines
• online VHDX resize
• enhanced support for Dynamic Memory
• granular actions for each cloud
• ability to inject file prior to the first boot of VM
• ability to create Windows and Linux-based VMs from a gallery of templates
• faster Live Migration & support for Windows Server 2012 R2
• support for Oracle Linux 5 (x86 and x64), Oracle Linux 6 (x86 and x64), and Debian
GNU/Linux 7.0 (x86 and x64), as guest operating systems

(live cloning, VHDX resize, Dynamic Memory, assign actions per cloud,
create VMs from templates)
What’s new in VMM? (2)
• Fabric
• host profiles are replaced by physical computer profiles
• almost the same as host profiles for provisioning a bare-metal computer to a Hyper-V host
• you can use physical computer profiles to provision a bare-metal computer as a Windows Scale-Out
File Server cluster
• Storage
• Virtual Fibre Channel support
• Leverage of the Windows Server 2012 Offloaded Data Transfer (ODX) capability
• shared VHDX support
• Scale-Out File Server cluster provisioning from bare-metal computers
• support for Storage Spaces

What’s new in VMM? (3)
• Networking
• Site-to-site NVGRE gateway
• IP Address Management (IPAM) integration with VMM
• Top-of-rack (TOR) switch integration with VMM
• Integration with IPAM
• many VMs require many IP addresses, you need some kind of centralized
management of the address space
• IPAM???
• VMM can now be integrated with IPAM in Windows Server
• enables you two things:
• create VM networks in VMM (IPAM will pick this up)
• create logical networks in IPAM (VMM will pick this up)
What’s new in VMM? (4)
• Services
• support for scripts that create a guest cluster
• allow the script that runs on the first deployed virtual machine to be different than the script that
runs on the other virtual machines in the tier
• Infrastructure
• allow for an auto-task to resume after virtual machine failover
• expanded computer scope for VMM update management
• you can use a Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) server to manage updates for these
infrastructure servers in the same way that you do for other computers in the VMM environment
• management packs are updated with new metrics for chargeback purposes that are
based both on allocation and utilization

What’s new in VMM? (5)
• Additional enhancements & changes
• P2V is no longer supported!
r2-environment.aspx
• improved integration with Hyper-V Recovery Manager
• VMM is enhanced to provide the infrastructure that is required by Hyper-V Recovery Manager to
enable cloud based replication, supporting recovery scenarios of VMM managed private clouds and
datacenters
• Remote Console
• allows tenants to access the console of their virtual machines in an environment where it is usually
not possible (when the virtual machine is on an isolated network, or in an untrusted network)
• setup automatically configures collation according to the language of the server
operating system
What should you be
aware of?
Some things don’t work (yet)
• the Physical-to-Virtual (P2V) feature is removed from the System Center
2012 R2!
• if System Center 2012 R2 VMM is installed on Windows Server 2012, you
cannot manage Spaces storage devices that are attached to a Scale-out
File server
• Spaces storage requires an updated SMAPI that is included with Windows Server 2012 R2 release version
• for file server clusters that were not created by VMM, deploying the VMM
agent to file server nodes will enable Multipath I/O (MPIO) and claim
devices
• this operation will cause the server to restart
• deploying the VMM agent to all nodes in a Scale-out File Server cluster will cause all nodes to restart
• Windows Server supports storage tiering with Storage Spaces
• VMM does not manage tiering policy
So…
• use 3rd party tools or DISK2VHD (no DISK2VHDX tool) for P2V
• older version of VMM?
• continue to use G1 VMs if using VMM?
• there is no conversion between G1 and G2 (officially), but…

• …
