It is difficult to translate: primarily 3 different words. 4.The word is rarely used in English . 5.Some people are put off such words. 6.Therefore some think such a study should be relegated only to theological students and not in a sermon. 1. A biblical word: used 6 times 2.Difficult spiritual concepts are to be understood, not ignored. 3. The bible was written for everyone, not theological students. 4.You will be encouraged and enriched by this study and have another reason to praise (brag) about what God has done for you in salvation. I do not find it an elegant word, nor one which is easily understood by most people today. By all means let us abandon it if we can find a better way of expressing what it stands for. But if I am not greatly concerned about the word, I am greatly concerned about the idea that it conveys. Propitiation: pacify anger ANGRY GOD WRATH from ROMANS 1:18, 24, 26, 28 2:5,6 3:5 3:9-20 God’s wrath not like human wrath God must oppose sin in order to be God Sin & sinful people must be dealt with so His wrath is satisfied “All is now right” Mankind’s inability to satisfy God’s wrath Propitiation: God’s work for you “All is now right” Begins with God; ends with God “God does not love us because Christ died for us; Christ died for us because God loves us”. Shows us: the terrible extend to sin and costliness in dealing with it. But now apart from the law the righteousness of God has been made known, to which the Law and the Prophets testify. God presented Christ as a sacrifice of atonement, through the shedding of his blood--to be received by faith. He did this to demonstrate his righteousness, because in his forbearance he had left the sins committed beforehand unpunished--he did it to demonstrate his righteousness at the present time, so as to be just and the one who justifies those who have faith in Jesus.
