CSCOPE End of Year Update Planning for 2012-2013 ©2012, TESCCC Objective • To help districts understand the content changes, new projects, and projected posting windows for 12-13 CSCOPE components so that they may make prudent decisions regarding curriculum planning for the upcoming school year Terminology and Acronyms • • • • • • • • Vertical Alignment Documents - VADs TEKS Clarification Documents - TCDs Instructional Focus Documents – IFDs Year at a Glance – YAG TEKS Verification Documents – TVDs Student Expectations – SEs English Language Arts/Reading – ELAR Spanish Language Arts/Reading – SLAR Unit Test Revision Project Unit Test Revision Project • EdGate, a national correlation company, has been contracted to conduct an extensive review of CSCOPE’s IFDs and their corresponding unit tests, focusing on alignment to the content, cognitive rigor, and intent of the IFD. • After this initial analysis, a Unit Test Advisory Committee will be created from qualified district staff and ESC specialists to review EdGate’s recommendations. (Applications were distributed through ESCs.) • Final test revisions will be submitted to the CSCOPE Assessment Team for the creation of enhanced unit tests for 2012-13. Unit Test Revision Project Timelines: • May – Early July: EdGate analyzes unit tests and IFDs • Mid- July: Recommendations due from EdGate • Late July: Teacher Review Committee of EdGate recommendations • August – December: Revisions made in our current test generator, translations 2nd – 5th, posting in new site Content Updates English Language Arts and Reading and Spanish Language Arts and Reading ELAR and SLAR Update • VADs: enhanced for more robust specificity and added clarity • YAG and TEKS Verification: no significant changes • IFDs: enhanced for improved specificity and additional strike-throughs to help target instruction ELAR and SLAR Update • Lessons: enhanced as appropriate, but no significant changes • Unit Tests: revised to ensure appropriate levels of rigor and alignment SCIENCE UPDATE Science Update Biology and Environmental Systems: • Major changes in bundling for Biology and Environmental Systems due to additional information from TEA and teacher feedback • Rebundling of TEKS will result in the development of new YAGs, TVDs, IFDs, and new lessons (as necessary) • Revision of unit tests for Biology and Environmental Systems Science Update IPC and Grade 7: • IPC will have several changes in the order of several second semester units in order to enhance conceptual understanding for students • Grade 7 will have one unit (Physical, Chemical and Energy Changes in the Digestive System) move to later in the year to accommodate teacher feedback and student development Science Update Other Grade Levels: • VADs: enhanced for more robust specificity and added clarity; additional examples added • YAGs and TEKS Verification: no significant changes in most grade levels other than revision to number of days and infusing additional process TEKS • IFDs: enhanced for improved specificity and additional emphasis on Readiness and Supporting Standards Science Update Other Grade Levels • Lessons: enhanced through possible shifts in number of days of instruction to more deeply address Readiness and Supporting Standards; increased rigor in alignment with improved specificity on IFD; improvements on activities as appropriate • Unit Tests: revised to ensure appropriate levels of rigor and alignment MATHEMATICS UPDATE Mathematics Update • VADs/TCDs: enhanced for clarification by adding specificity in several grade levels; enhanced vertical alignment in areas • YAGs and TEKS Verification: no significant changes on YAGs; O’s added where appropriate on TVDs • IFDs: no significant changes, but enhanced for clarity and vertical alignment Mathematics Update • Enhanced Instructional Transition Guides (new EITGs) – New EITGs will replace the existing 11-12 Instructional Transition Guides (ITGs) and 09-10 lessons – EITGs will be housed in the new technology system and will provide the following: • detailed instructional procedures • identified instructional vocabulary • defined materials lists • specific teacher notes • aligned handouts/attachments appropriate for teaching each unit New Mathematics Standards • State Board of Education passed New Mathematics Standards 04/20/2012 • Implementation of new standards: – 2014-2015 school year: Kindergarten - Grade 8: – 2015-2016 school year: High School • SBOE removed approximately 80 percent of the illustrative examples introduced by the words “such as” in the standards to streamline curriculum SOCIAL STUDIES Social Studies Update • VADs: revisions to specificity made throughout the year; no significant changes for 12-13 • YAGs and TEKS Verification: no significant changes • IFDs: revisions made throughout the year; no significant changes for 12-13 Social Studies Update • Lessons: new 12-13 social studies lessons will be available in the new technology system (aligned to the new social studies TEKS) • Unit Tests: revised to ensure to appropriate levels of rigor and alignment Social Studies Update • Resources and References – In the new social studies lessons, CSCOPE will outline a framework for gathering appropriate resources with consideration of the following: • • • • • Quickly changing demographics and world events District purchased resources District flexibility Point of View Copyright 12-13 Posting Windows Posting Projections 12-13 Please know that the projections listed below are estimates and may be subject to change. New Technology Provider • Representatives from 3rd Learning have been in a continuous process of gathering input and feedback from all CSCOPE stakeholder groups to ensure a truly collaborative design effort. • CSCOPE, in partnership with 3rd Learning, will provide training support and videos that will be available to end users both on the new site and through your ESC. Update on New Website Some of the exciting features of the new system include: • Dynamic CSCOPE components such as an interactive YAG that provides quick and easy access to IFDs and Exemplar Lessons • Capability to move the components most frequently used into a "My CSCOPE" area for quick access • A suite of easy-to-use, intuitive tools • Enhanced capabilities for end-user feedback and comments • New communication features including CSCOPE Updates and CSCOPE News links on the home page 12-13 Content in New Site IMPORTANT: Updated 2012-13 CSCOPE content will become available in the new system as applicable to the communicated projected posting windows. • CSCOPE will only post 2012-13 versions of content in the new system with enhanced features and functionality when the site launches in July. • CSCOPE will work with districts to ensure that approved versions of district-created or customized content needed for the 2012-13 school year will be available in the new system. Will the CSCOPE URL change? • Yes. The new user profile system will guide users to their CSCOPE site through a universal URL.
