A Tax Deductible Charity
Through the Diocese of Erie
The St.
Anthony’s Orphanage Mission was established on Dec. 25, 2001, to provide financial help for the care and education of 180 orphan children at the St.
Anthony’s Children’s
Home, Nagercoil, TN, India. In this orphanage, deserted and orphaned children from infants to
22 yrs. are cared for by members of the
Congregation of Sisters of the Sacred Heart of
Jesus.
All financial contributions are tax deductible through the Mission Office, Diocese of Erie. Since the mission is run by volunteers, there are no overhead costs, and 100% of contributions are used for orphan welfare programs.
Our goal is to support the cost of care and education for the orphan children at St.
Anthony’s Children’s Home, Nagercoil, India, through regular financial contributions. The mission is committed to using 100% of the tax deductible contributions for orphan welfare programs.
The Children’s Home is located in a village called
Kurusady, near Nagercoil. A majority of the
10,000 residents of the village are poor. Only some of the houses in the village have electricity, and running water. The men work as fishermen or hired agricultural workers. Wages are poor and the income is very seasonal. In 1969 the Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus began a convent school and an orphanage in Kurusady.
More than 100 children (girls and boys) are cared for in the orphanage. Sustained funding only supports food, clothing and medical expenses for some of the children. The rest depend on the generosity of benefactors. The children are educated in a local school or taught vocational skills such as tailoring, nursing, or basket weaving. There is great need for financial help to educate all the orphan children until they are able to find employment and earn a living. College education support is an important mission.

Mission Programs
• College Tuition Support
This program provides financial help needed to support college tuition & living costs of the orphan children. The average cost of education for the children is as follows:
Nursing Diploma = $ 900 / child / year
Nursing Degree = $ 2000 / child / year
Other Degrees = $ 1200 / child / year
There is no sustained funding to support the education of any orphan child. As education is the most effective way to make the orphan children self sufficient, there is a great need for help and contribution support.
Several children choose Nursing as a career, and some choose arts, and science courses. A few of the children also choose professional courses such as engineering.
Holy Cross College in Nagercoil, is one choice for girls who want to study arts and science.
From 2002 and until 2012, the mission has helped more than 25 orphan children attend college and earn a degree. Many of these graduates are now employed, and plan to
“give back” some time, talent, or money to help the orphanage, and mission.
Mission Programs
• Sacred Heart Nursing College
The sisters of the Sacred Heart always dreamed of running their own Nursing
College. By the Grace of God, and help from generous donors, the Sacred Heart
College of Nursing has been constructed in the town of Dindugal, India. It was inaugurated in Oct. 2012 by the Bishop of
Vellore, and Sr. Anne of the SSHJ.
Each year, a few orphan children study in the Nursing College, and a few graduates
(who were supported by the mission) now serve as faculty. The college is also looking for assistance from other established nursing colleges to enhance & expand capabilities.
There is currently a great need for financial help for building a dormitory, and expanding the clinical laboratory, and library. Additionally, a Hospital needs to be constructed in the college campus within 5 years, to satisfy statutory requirements. Your generous contribution is vital for continued success.

• Food and Clothing Support
At an average monthly cost of $10 per child, the food and clothing needs of the children are very modest.
However, sustained funding for living costs exists only a few of the children.
Local donors sometimes sponsor a meal, or bring clothes for some of the children. Please assist a child, through your valuable monthly contribution.
• English Language Skills
It is important to teach English communication skills to the children to make them employable. With this in mind, we have installed a TV, and DVD system at the orphanage, where the children learn spoken
English through DVDs. The senior students also assist the young ones with this important task.
