The Milk Highland Council for Schools – e-bulletin service Gold Star Awarded to Norma Murray of the Highland Council - for a superb Radio Four programme detailing the revolution in school meals going on in Scotland - brilliant stuff. The school meals changes based on the Scottish Parliament's H4S programme is being enhanced still further by the Soil Association's Food for Life project which has an emphasis on local and organic produce. The local politics of sustainability of community and JOBS in farming in relationship to school meals. Procurement is a sound lesson - pity more Westminster politicians can't seem to get their head around. One supplier of meat had 55 employees and took produce from over 1,000 local farmers and crofters which was supplied to the Highland Council - and these are FRESH products not frozen - got to be good for improved quality of the finished meal on the plate. More to the point one head teacher was quoted as saying “the changes in school meals together with the water programme, free fruit scheme and breakfast club had a positive impact on both behaviour and concentration of her pupil”. Won't that make meals more expensive? Norma said “although organic produce did cost more initially she was hopeful that as production increased the products would become more affordable and with the Food for Life scheme came the whole package of education, perhaps farm visits which would bring children closer to the land so they would learn that eggs don't actually come from the supermarket”.
