WORKSOP
MEDIA AND CULTURAL
CONFLICTS
Istanbul, May 2011
Mag.Dr. Emilija Mančić
What the workshop is about
• Theoretical and practical knowledge on the role of the
media in forming culturally diverse society.
• Encourage both creativity in dealing with cultural
diversity and build awareness of the:
- importance of the media in determining our image of
current developments due to ethnic, cultural and
religious changes.
- to reflect upon and actively discuss on the specific role of
the media as: observers, reporters and players (in a
socio-cultural setting marked by a.m. changes – without
thereby ignoring conflicts)
2
Wokshop objectives
• Theoretical introduction to:
- notion of culture
- cultural diversity
• Explanation of the relationship:
culture and conflict
...
3
Wokshop objectives
• To sensitize students for the themes:
- cultural diversity
- role of media in dealing with the cultural
conflicts
• To give example on reports in which there
is talk with others
4
• Culture:
what we understand when referring to
culture?
• Cultural Diversity:
what terms are used to describe different
aspects of cultural diversity?
5
• Culture and Conflict:
what is the relationship of culture and
conflict?
• Media and Integration:
what modes of inclusion and exclusion are
being applied in media?
6
What is culture?
• Culture is one of the most complicated words in the
English language. (Raymond Williams)
• Culture is the whole way of life... (T.S. Eliot)
• >Kultur< marks the whole sum of efforts and institutions
by which our live veers away from that of our animal
ancestors. (Sigmund Freud)
• Culture as system, by which human beings
communicate, sustain and develop their knowledge
about life and their attitudes towards it. (Clifford Geertz)
• Culture as a battelground! (Edward Said)
7
Cultural Diversity
• Terms to describe cultural diversity:
multiculturalism, cultural pluralism, inter-culturalism...
• Cultural diversity “within” a society
• Cultural diversity “between” states, societies and/or
cultures. The second dimension of cultural diversity related to inter-culturalism
8
9
Culture and Conflict
• Conflict
„…a strong emotion resulting from a perceived difference in
needs or values.“ (Neil Katz)
• Culture
not innate / learned / transmissible through symbols
(language) / dynamic / selective / ethnocentric
10
Culture conflicts
• Need a cultural analysis
• Benjamin Broom: „relational empathy“
a) the context underlying the other's expressions and
b) the context in which the encounter itself is embedded.
(Relational empathy: the creation of shared meaning during
the interpersonal encounter)
• „The third culture“ as a medium
11
Media and Cultural Diveristy
(Integration)
• The central tasks of European societies and politics:
to accept the ethnic, cultural and religious changes
• Media shows and forms the immigration society
• One-sided reporting:
- contribute to a general feeling of uncertainty
- does not serve the purpose of enlightenment.
• To examine prejudices and differentiate is necessary for
peaceful coexistence
12
Understanding of developments and
conflicts in reports
 Characteristics of a „good“ report:
 stereotypes and generalised assertions are
countered through differentiated statements
 humour is not at the expense of other groups, but
rather results from the own reference group
 the realities of the immigrants or minorities, their
normal daily life, with all their problems and positive
aspects are presented without presenting them as a
social problem
...
13
...
 offensive terms which are characterised by, or
reinforce, prejudices, are not used
 people with different-coloured skins or appearance
are taken for granted and have a significant impact on
the programme
 in reports there is not talk about others, but rather talk
with them.
