The DeBakey HSHP Mathematics Department Our Mission: To prepare students for success in AP Calculus while helping them to develop an appreciation and proficiency with mathematical thinking which can be applied to real life situations. Our Vision: We will have high expectations of ourselves and of our students, be willing to take risks and to be challenged, work collaboratively and be patient in the process. 1 2 The DeBakey HSHP Mathematics Department Our Goals: Continuously work to improve and enhance curriculum Vertically align curriculum based on Houston ISD curriculum and best practices for PreAP/AP alignment Create one common assessment per cycle per course (written and distributed at least 2 weeks prior to administration) Have a common grading policy (Department wide) Have a common lesson schedule/framework for each course Integrate AP style free response questions at all levels Integrate other disciplines into the curriculum Continue motivating students toward taking the AP exam at all grade levels. Work collaboratively towards improving the performance of at-risk students and communicate proactively with parents and administration regarding at-risk students 3 4–year Math Curriculum Sequence 9th Grade: Geometry (M/Pre AP) and (Algebra I (M) for those who need it) 10th Grade: Algebra II (M/PreAP) 11th Grade: Precalculus (M/PreAP) 12th Grade: AP Calculus AB / AP Calculus BC AP Statistics can be taken after completing Algebra 2. We recommend students to take it in 11th or 12th grade. Currently it is offered before school everyday from 7 a.m. to 7:50 a.m. and during regular Period B4. A 6 week Algebra 2 PreAP course is offered in summer for qualifying students. AP Computer Science course is offered during regular B4 period this year. 4 DHSHP Standards Tighten Tests: 50 %, Quizzes: 40 %, and Homework: 10 %. Typically 2 – 3 tests, 3 – 4 quizzes are given every cycle. Projects may be assigned and they may be equivalent to a test grade or a quiz grade depending upon the type and extent of the project. Tests and quizzes are graded and returned to the students normally during the next class. 5 DHSHP Standards Tighten Homework questions are reviewed/answered before starting a new lesson. Students are encouraged to do homework sincerely and regularly and be prepared to ask questions during homework review. Tentative schedule of lessons and assessments during the whole cycle is given to the students so that they can plan their study time effectively. Progress report is issued after the third week of the cycle. Parents are requested to monitor the progress of their child through quizzes and tests which are returned to the students. Grades are also posted on Gradespeed. 6 Tutorials/Extra Help Note: Tutoring is effective only if students put in efforts to work on the problems and come up with specific questions which can be answered by the teacher to facilitate better learning and understanding of the concepts. Title I tutorial program meets Monday – Thursday from 3:30 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. (except when there is a faculty meeting) and from 7:00 a.m. – 7:45 a.m. on Monday – Thursday – Check the schedule attached. At risk students are placed in morning tutorials from 7:50 a.m. to 8:20 a.m., Tuesday through Thursday. Review sessions were offered on 3 Saturdays during Cycle 1 and 2 for 9th grade Geometry students and they will be offered during Cycle 3 also. 7 Summer Practice Practice questions are available on the DeBakey HSHP website at the end of the school year for students to use to practice math skills throughout the summer. (Under Academics – Mathematics Dept) http://www.houstonisd.org/DeBakey 8 Review Sessions A review session will be offered on Saturday, December 14, 2013 from 8:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. before the Fall Semester Final Examination. Review sessions for AP courses will be offered on designated Saturdays and everyday after school in April 2013 – Dates will be announced later. PSAT Math Review sessions were offered after school on October 10 and 14 and a Mock PSAT was offered on Saturday, Sept 28. SAT Math Review sessions and a Mock SAT will be offered in Spring semester. Dates will be announced later. 9 AP Calculus Results Score Number of Students AP Calculus AB AP Calculus BC Year 06 07 08 09 10 11 12 13 06 07 08 09 10 11 12 13 5 11 12 24 28 38 46 56 68 4 7 9 7 12 25 39 29 4 28 17 43 34 53 46 51 45 3 3 1 1 9 0 2 12 3 30 44 33 31 58 63 43 38 4 0 0 1 5 1 1 2 2 19 35 11 9 26 20 17 9 1 1 0 0 0 0 0 0 1 6 13 0 3 9 8 7 6 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 1 Total tested 94 121 111 105 184 183 174 166 12 11 10 9 26 26 42 44 % Passed 73 60 90 89 81 84.7 86.2 91 92 91 100 100 100 100 100 97.7 10 AP Statistics Results Number of Students Score AP Statistics 2006 2007 2008 2009 2010 2011 2012 2013 5 2 6 2 5 18 13 13 26 4 7 4 10 9 14 9 15 23 3 6 2 7 2 5 3 5 11 2 2 0 1 1 2 0 2 0 1 1 0 0 1 0 0 1 1 Total # tested 18 12 20 18 39 25 36 61 % Passed 83 100 95 89 95 100 91.7 98.4 11 PTA -AP Incentive Program Last year AP Exam Prep sessions were offered after school everyday and on 2 Saturdays in April.
