Introduction: Literacy Through
Technology
►
►
►
Literacy Narrative: Defining oneself in the first person genre, the time
you enter the realm of literacy and its subsequent effects
Culture: “The behaviors and beliefs characteristic of a particular social,
ethnic or age group.”
Cultures I belong to: White, female, middle class, American
 As an American citizen, it is important to understand technology and be adept in its
various uses
 Technology is a tool that can be used for a range of tasks
 Today, literacy includes the use and understanding of technology
 Increased knowledge of technology can help open the door to intercultural
knowledge and decrease borders between backgrounds and nationalities
Background
►
►
►
My name is Chloe. I am currently a student studying Communications
Studies at Bowling Green State University. I am 20 years old.
I was raised in the suburbs of Sylvania, Ohio. Raised by a single parent
with low income, we moved often and lived occasionally with other
family members.
Being an only child, I spent a lot of time studying. I read constantly
and enjoyed writing about what I read

►
In middle school, I became interested in computer technology

►
Some favorite authors were Stephen King, J.K. Rowling, George Orwell and J.D Salinger
Learned about HTML, creating JPEG and GIF images, floppy disks, speed typing, embedding audio onto web
pages and formatting a web page
In high school, I taught myself how to use audacity and began
recording music

Beginnings in Local Radio
►
►
►
►
In college, I began working as a
DJ on local radio station 88.1
WBGU FM
Radio: “an apparatus for
receiving or transmitting radio
broadcasts.”
Broadcasting: “to transmit
programs or signals from a radio
or television station.”
Some terms I had to familiarize
myself with: Cues, underwriting,
promos and PSAs, auxiliary,
decibels, logging, rotation,
currents

September 3, 2013 on my weekly
electronica show, The Space Whale
► I interviewed local band The Shame
Game, gave weather updates, aired
promotions, talked and aired
electronic music during breaks
► When conducting a show with
multiple elements, multitasking,
time management and organization
are important skills to have
►
Communication Technology
► With
the advent of
new media technology,
it has become possible
to communicate with
fewer borders with
people from all
different regions and
cultures.
Connecting Through Radio
►
As a global citizen, I find myself
able to access networks through
a variety of sources. When I
became a DJ for college radio, I
became immersed in a world of
diversity. Interacting with other
DJs on a regional and
international level, and hearing
music from different cultures
and genres, opened the door to
the realm of global access and
communication.
Continued
►
For instance, I learned that
traditional music varies greatly
from culture to culture, each
with its own unique qualities
and contributions. I also found
that while it may appear that
Western “Popular” music may
appear to take precedence over
other music, in fact it takes its
styles and influence from
cultures and regions ranging
from Africa to Central Europe.
Future Implications
With the rise in new communication
technology, it becomes possible for
people to interact with greater
fluidity on a global level.
► As these communication
technologies unfold, radio
broadcasting can reach new levels
of inclusion, in which broadcasters
and listeners can interact with
greater ease and accessibility.
► This could allow greater knowledge
in different music styles, improving
world cultural knowledge and
allowing people with a better
understanding of where music
originates
►
This is Radioflag, a new broadcasting technology. It allows DJs from
all different states and countries to communicate and stream
broadcasts from their computer or phone.
Conclusion
►
I have found through my experiences that learning opens new
windows of opportunity and allows for growth and change.
►
It is important to realize the importance and impact of global
communication, and the many ways that communication technology
can be used.
►
In the future, I hope to continue learning and gaining knowledge of
different cultures, people and ways of being. By immersing oneself in
various fields and areas of interest, it becomes possible to learn how
cultures influence and impact each other.
Final Quote
►
“You cannot help to learn more as you take the world into
your hands. Take it up reverently, for it is an old piece of
clay, with millions of thumbprints on it.”
 John Updike
