Health and Wellness or Sports Management LEAP Is a program aimed at taking ATHLETES with CHARACTER and LEADERSHIP POTENTIAL and giving them every opportunity to learn how to MAKE A DIFFERENCE in their life and the lives of others through sport. • How do we do it? • Through a Specialist High Skills Major Program (SHSM) in Health and Wellness or Sports Management -grade 11 and 12 students • Presents the opportunity to explore in depth the many career options associated with the Health and Wellness and Sports Management industries. • Provides knowledge, skills certification and employment experiences within the industry in a “team” environment with other athletes in the school. LEAP WHAT IS A SHSM? Students at elementary tournament • A ministry approved specialized program that allows students to focus their learning on a specific economic sector (E.g. Health, Transportation, Communications) • Enables students to gain specific skills and knowledge which are relevant to an area that they may be interested in pursuing, while helping them focus on graduation and their post-secondary goals LEAP STUDENTS WILL • Earn industry recognized certifications • Explore Health and Wellness or Sports Management related experiences through co-op placements, job shadowing, facility tours (E.g. Fowler Kennedy Sport Medicine Clinic, Combine 360 London, UWO, Nutrition Rx, Moksha Yoga, etc.) • Further develop leadership, communication, critical thinking, problem solving skills and work habits that are essential for success in the future LEAP students at combine 360 London LEAP COURSE PROGRAMS Students will be required to take the following courses: • • 4 Majors in Health and Wellness (E.g. Biology (mandatory), Physical Education, Exercise Science (mandatory), Chemistry, Fitness Or 4 Majors in Sports Management (E.g. Biology (mandatory), Law, Accounting, Exercise Science, International Business, Business Leadership • 2 co-op credits involving placements and experiences • 1 senior Math, English, and a Science or Social Science course, which will include learning activities relating to Health and Wellness or Sports Management LEAP TRAINING STUDENTS RECEIVE • • • • • • • • • • CPR and First aid WHMIS Awareness CFES (1) Fitness Knowledge NCCP (Fundamental Movement Skills) Conflict Resolution Infection Control (Health and Wellness) Taping Certification (Fowler Kennedy) Leadership (Annual trip to Leadership Camp at Muskoka Woods) Mentorship from guest speakers in many areas related to health, wellness, and sports Financial Literacy (Sports Management) LEAP ADDITIONAL OPPORTUNITIES • • • • • • Volunteer Community Hours in an athletic environment Volunteer opportunities at LDCSB and other tournaments, athletic festivals, conferences Experience planning fundraising activities, applying for grants, organizing tournaments Partnerships with local businesses and sports organizations to explore athletics and exercise training Athletic development training Leadership, character education in a high performance environment Volunteer opportunity at LDCSB elementary tournament “Hidden” Curriculum Leap students feel part of a family. They are grouped together for part of each semester in grade 11 and 12 and enjoy the support of their program classmates. They are driven to succeed when surrounded by others that are driven as well. The students are constantly applying new knowledge in the world outside the classroom, and are quite engaged in their learning. *They are actively learning the Ontario Curriculum of many subjects through their love of athletics and community involvement.
