AURORA QUEST K-8 MATH NIGHT!!! August 21, 2014 Aurora Quest K-8 Math Night Outcomes • Provide parents with the philosophy behind the ways in which we teach mathematics and how we make decisions about math instruction • Share recent student math achievement data from Aurora Quest • Help parents to better understand different ways that they can support their children in learning important mathematical concepts • Help parents to better understand the trajectory of math concepts/courses and how teachers support the learning of mathematics based on strong conceptual understandings What is 85% off of $60? 30% of what number is 42? Peg Smith Quote Most schoolwork consists of assignments composed of “problems” for which students have been taught a preferred method of solving. There is little engagement of student “thinking” in such tasks, only the straightforward application of previously learned skills and memorized facts. It is unrealistic to expect students to learn to grapple with the unstructured, messy challenges of today’s world if they are forced to silently sit in rows, complete basic skills worksheets, and engage in teacher-led “discussions” that consist of literal, fact-based questions and answers. Common Core Standards for Mathematical Practice #1 Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them #2 Reason abstractly and quantitatively #3 Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others #4 Model with mathematics #5 Use appropriate tools strategically #6 Attend to precision #7 Look for and make use of structure #8 Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning “Questized” Pacing Guides During the 2014-2015, the new Colorado Academic Standards will be fully implemented (Math and Literacy have been infused with the Common Core State Standards) • • In anticipation of these new standards, Aurora Quest K-5 teachers have been working on “Questizing” math and literacy pacing guides to ensure that they feature the necessary amount of rigor in content in order to meet student needs. Like the Quest report cards from last year, this will be ongoing work over the next couple of years.
