Agriculture
• The Nile river floods for about
10 weeks.
• When the flood water recedes, it
leaves behind a layer of fine
black silt, which was the fertile
soil that Egyptian farmers used.
• The Egyptians saw the new silt
as a gift from the Nile.
Agriculture
• They were growing wheat,
barley, lettuce, onions, peas,
and lentils.
• They also grew figs and other
fruits.
Transportation
• The Nile river was a busy
highway with riverboats carrying
people, animals and goods from
place to place.
• The simple boats were made
from papyrus held together with
rope.
Transportation
• Bigger boats sailed in the middle
of the Nile, where the water was
deeper. These boats were cargo
boats made from wood.
• These boats sailed North downriver using the Nile’s currents, or
South, heading up-river using the
winds from the Mediterranean
Sea.
Animals
• Fishing eagles are found along
the Nile river.
• Crocodiles are common on the
banks of the river and are the
most dangerous animals.
• The baboons and ibis were sacred
animals.
• Hippos are found along the Nile
and are the Egyptian’s most
feared animals.
