Assembly of a Syringe
Gather syringe and needle
Select a syringe and needle. Syringe size and needle gauge will depend on the
provider’s needs. Syringes often come packaged separately allowing the
healthcare professional to have flexibility in needle length and gauge and
syringe size.
In patient
administration
areas,
caregivers may
choose to don
gloves just
before patient
administration.
Check your
facility’s policy’s
and procedures
for syringe
assembly in
your work area.
Open syringe packaging
Open syringe packaging exposing the plunger end not the syringe tip end
of the syringe. Do not completely remove the packaging and expose the
tip of the syringe.
Opening the needle
Making sure not to touch the needle hub to any surface or any part of
your hands, open the needle exposing the needle hub.
Remove the syringe from packaging
Completely remove the syringe from its packaging, while making sure not
to touch the needle hub to your hands or any other surface.
Attach the needle to the syringe
Attach the needle hub to the syringe tip.
Syringe tips and needles will be luer lock or slip tip.
Secure the needle on the syringe
Make sure that the needle is securely attached. Firm pressure should be
applied to slip tip syringes and luer-lock needles should be secured by
twisting the needle hub onto the threads of the luer-lock syringe.
