Assembly of a Syringe Gather syringe and needle Select a syringe and needle. Syringe size and needle gauge will depend on the provider’s needs. Syringes often come packaged separately allowing the healthcare professional to have flexibility in needle length and gauge and syringe size. In patient administration areas, caregivers may choose to don gloves just before patient administration. Check your facility’s policy’s and procedures for syringe assembly in your work area. Open syringe packaging Open syringe packaging exposing the plunger end not the syringe tip end of the syringe. Do not completely remove the packaging and expose the tip of the syringe. Opening the needle Making sure not to touch the needle hub to any surface or any part of your hands, open the needle exposing the needle hub. Remove the syringe from packaging Completely remove the syringe from its packaging, while making sure not to touch the needle hub to your hands or any other surface. Attach the needle to the syringe Attach the needle hub to the syringe tip. Syringe tips and needles will be luer lock or slip tip. Secure the needle on the syringe Make sure that the needle is securely attached. Firm pressure should be applied to slip tip syringes and luer-lock needles should be secured by twisting the needle hub onto the threads of the luer-lock syringe. Assembled syringe The assembled syringe should remain capped until use.
