VEN CONMIGO A LA REPUBLICA DOMINICANA
The Indians who arrived brought with them a knowledge
of ceramics, semi-sedentary
agriculture based on maize and yucca, a religion
based on zemí worship (ancestor spirit-guides and
mythical gods represented on earth by artistic symbols
and objects of the same name), and ceremonies
that included
community-wide dancing/singing festivals called
areitos and soccer-like
ball games called bateyes.
Song of the Taínos
The Taínos were not only in the
Dominican republic, but in
Puerto Rico, Cuba, Venezuela,
and other caribbean islands.
They taught the civilizations which they
were at many new things.
They helped advance the civilizations
and make them grow.
"Dios no creó a la mujer de la cabeza
Del hombre, para que recibiera
ordenes... Ni tampoco de sus
pies, para que fuera
su esclava... Si no de su costado, para
que esté siempre cerca de su corazón."
When there is Faith, there is Peace.
When there is Peace, there is Love.
When there is Love, there is GOD.
When there is GOD, there is no need
When the dominican republic was first found, the
People there would get real sick and many of them
Died because of illnesses caused by being there.
Later on Bartolomé landed there was clean water,
good soil to grow food, and gold,But because
of what happened previous no one would go there To
name it so it was named “Santo Domingo de Guzmán.
The first major battle over the Dominican Republic was the European-Indian
battle at Santo Cerro. It was a massive battle that took place in 1495 after
Bartolomé Colón had led Spanish troops against the Taínos of the Cibao for
10 long months. The first sign of the break of a European-Indian treaty
was when there was a massacre in 1504 at Cacica Anacaona’s where Europeans
killed hundreds of men, women, and children. As a result the first systematic
exploitation and enslavement of both Indians and Africans in the New
World under Spain’s encomienda and slave laws. This slavery and bad treatment
led to a rebellion in 1519 that lasts until 1533. The rebellion led
Colón to announce the New World’s slave-control ordinance on January 6, 1522.
Brave men of Quisqueya,
Let us sing with strong feeling,
And let us show with pride to the world
Our invincible, glorious banner.
Hail, O people who, intrepid and strong,
Launched into war and went to death,
Under a warlike menace of death
You broke your chains of slavery.
And if an unattended leader the splendor
Of these glorious events could ignore,
One has seen in Capotillo (in the war
The flag of fire wave.
And the fire that lets the proud lion
Of Castilla become stupefied,
Removes him from the glorious beaches
Where the crossed banner waves.
No nation deserves to be free
Compatriots, let us proudly
If it is an indolent and servile slave;
Show our face, from today prouder than ever;
If in it's nature the flame doesn't grow
Quisqueya may be destroyed
The virile heroïsm will be tempered.
But a slave again, never!
But Quisqueya indomitable and brave
It is a sanctuary of love that every character
Will always hold its head high;
Of the fatherland feels alive!
Even if it were a thousand times enslaved
And it is his coat of arms, the right;
Every time it would regain freedom.
And it is his device: be free or die.
If it will be exposed to ruse and deceit
Unto contempt of a real imposer,
On to Las Carreras! Beler! ...it were places
Where the traces of glory are found.
Where on the top of the heroic bastion,
The word of the libarated became flesh,
Where the genius of Sánchez and Duarte (*3)
Teached to be free or to die.
Freedom that still rises cool-bloodedly
The victory in her triumphal car.
And the clarion of war re-echoes
Proclaiming his immortal glory.
Freedom! That the echo's touch
While they're full of noble tension
Our fields of glory repeat
