Energy Sector Products & Markets Decentralised plants Increasing prices of fossil fuels Global warming Political pressure on use of renewable energy Increasing demand for electricity Unused energy sources Benefits of decentralised plants Satisfy own demands for electricty and process steam Take advantage of own energy sources like heat, biomass or waste Fuel from own industrial plant or the immediate vicinity avoid transport cost and logistic problems Independence of the national electricty grid As a matter of fact the interest in such decentral power plants is increasing. Energy Sector Products & Markets Turbine requirements Easy integration in the plant and the process Operation with ordinary steam parameters / minimised peripheral equipment necessary Pre-tested and ready-for-use for short erection and commissioning time Low investment costs High reliability Simple operation which results in low personnel costs Low operating costs Design considers future duty changes Low revamp costs Siemens pre-designed turbines in order to satisfy these criteria. Energy Sector Products & markets SST-110 (TWIN) example Eccleshall Biomass Farming for energy is a proposal for a 2 megawatt power plant for the generation of electricity fuelled by energy crops. This is enough to run 2000 average households. The main fuel, miscanthus (pictured) will be grown locally offering diversification opportunities and long term fuel supply contracts for up to 60 farms. A local Growers Group has already been established to coordinate fuel supply. Miscanthus is a non-invasive, sterile, perennial grass grown and harvested on local farms within a 25 mile radius of the plant. The Biomass Power Plant is designed to ensure there will be no additional noise nuisance above existing background noise during 24 hour operation. Emissions have been voluntarily set to a higher standard than the regulatory requirements for air quality. There will be no visible steam pump or odour emitted from the stack and performance will be monitored by Stafford Borough Council. The plant saves 1 tonne per hour of CO2 which would be emitted generating electricity from fossil fuel. Page 11 May 2011 Christoph Frey Copyright © Siemens AG 2011. All rights reserved.
