Wave Rock
Wave Rock
The Wave Rock, also named as the Hyden
Rock is located 3km away from a town
called Hyden and 296 km away from
Perth, Western Australia. It is a large,
natural igneous rock called the Wave Rock
because it is shaped like a gigantic ocean
wave, it is an amazing, interesting and
unique tourist attraction. The Wave Rock
is about 14 metres tall and 110 metres
long. This distinctive rock has been
weathered over millions of years,
Aborigines were the first to live there. The
Wave Rock area has a Mediterranean and
mostly mild climate.
Wave Rock Formation
The Wave Rock’s wave shape does not occur
because of waves. The Wave Rock is made of
granite, which is an igneous rock that is formed
by the crystallization, solidification and slowly
cooling pockets of magma or lava that were
trapped beneath the earth’s surface. It was a
round shape before it became into an ocean
wave shape. Weathering, wind and water
erosion caused the Wave Rock to have this
distinctive shape approximately 2700,000,000
years ago, before dinosaurs existed. Rain ran
down the granite during wet days and made the
curved shape. Dissolved and liquefied minerals
and chemicals formed vertical stripes of various
colours of red, yellow and grey on the Wave
Rock, the colours darken and lighten during day
and night.
