British holidays,
traditions and
customes.
New Year
There are a number of holidays, which
are celebrated in Great Britain every
year.
One of them is, of course, New Year's
Day on the first of January. It is not so
popular in England as in our country,
but it is rather popular in Scotland. On
that day people usually visit their
friends and there is a lot of dancing and
eating. In Scotland people bring a piece
of coal for good luck in the New Year.
New Year’s Eve all British
celebrate on the 31st of
December. Most people
see with friends and
relatives. At midnight on
New Year’s Eve, every
body joins hands and sings
New Year songs and
wishes their nearest and
dearest a happy New
Year.
The First Foot
In Scotland and the North of England there is
an interesting tradition called “The First
Foot”. The first visitor who comes into a
house in the New Year morning is the First
Foot. If he is with dark hair and a man or a
boy, he will bring good luck. He must have
some food, some money or a coal for the
fire.
St.Valentine’s Day.
St.Valentine’s Day has roots in several legends. Cupid, the Roman god of love
, is one of the earliest popular symbols of the day. Valentine was a
Christian priest. He lived 300 years after the death of Jesus Christ in the
Roman Empire. On February 14 Valentine was killed because he was a
Christian. He married couples contrary to the lows of the Roman Empire.
St.Valentine’s Day is now a day for sweethearts. Most people send
“valentines”, sentimental and heartfelt greetings cards.
St. Valentine's Day
The next holiday of the
year is St. Valentine's
Day. It is on the 14th of
February. People buy or
make Valentine cards and
send them to the people
they love.
Mother's Day
In May there is Mother's
Day. All the children, little
or adult ones, come to
their mothers on that day
to express their love and
gratitude.
Easter
In April there is Easter. At
Easter children eat
chocolate Easter eggs.
Sometimes parents hide
them in the house or in
the garden and children
have to look for them.
Father's Day.
In June there is Father's
Day. On Father's Day
children give or send their
fathers and grandfathers
cards and presents.
Hallowe’en.
On the 31st of October there is a
Halloween. People say ghosts and
witches come out on Halloween. People
make lanterns out of pumpkins. Some
people have Halloween parties and
dress as witches and ghosts. At
Halloween children make Jack

held on December 25th in honor of
the birth of Christ. Mainly used in
writing, for example on shop signs
and Christmas cards!
Christmas Day.
The 25th of December is Christmas Day. It is
one of the people's favourite holidays.
People put Christmas trees in their houses
and decorate them. There are beautiful
Christmas decorations in the streets. On
Christmas Eve everybody puts the presents
under the Christmas tree. People say that at
night Father Christmas puts presents into
the stockings which children usually hang on

The Chinese New Year is
celebrated in early February. It
is a time when people chase
away the evil spirits by setting
off firecrackers.

Stonehenge.
Stonehenge.
Midsummer’s Day, June 24th
is longest day of the years.
On that day a very old
custom at Stonehenge in
Wiltshire, England, is
observed. Stonehenge is
one of the Europe’s biggest
stone circles that is 10 or 12
meters high. The earliest
part of Stonehenge is
approximately 5,000 years
old. But what was
Stonehenge? A holy place?
A market? Or kind of
calendar? Actually the
Druids priests in Britain
used Stonehenge for a
calendar.
Stonehenge.
They introduced it about 2,000
years ago. The sun stones at
Stonehenge let the Druids know
when the months and seasons
start. On the morning of June
24th the sun shines on one
famous stone - the Hell Stone,
this is the most important
moment of the years for the
Druids. There are Druids in
Britain today, too, and every
June a lot of them attend
Stonehenge. It is a strange,
ancient, rare but still living
custom.

Thanksgiving Day
Thanksgiving is always on the 4th
Thursday of November.
People work a lot before the
holiday. Dad usually buys the
turkey. Mum stuffs the bird with
herbs and bread.
Then she roasts it. It’s important
not to burn the bird. We
celebrate Thanks-giving in the
family circle. First, we have a
church service. Then we have a
traditional Thanksgiving dinner:
A roast turkey, potatoes, and
popcorn. For dessert we prefer a
pumpkin pie with vanilla ice
cream.

In the USA Thanksgiving Day
started as a holiday of thanksgiving in the early days of the American
colonies about 400 years ago.
In 1620 , a boat with more than 100 people sailed across the Atlantic
Ocean to the New World to what is now the state of Massachusetts.
Their first winter was very difficult and without fresh food half the
colony died.
The Native Americans showed them how to grow corn, a new food for
colonists, they showed them how to hunt and fish.
In the autumn of 1621, bountiful crops of corn, beans and pumpkins
were picked up.
The colonists had much to be thankful for. They invited the local
Indians to a Thanksgiving dinner. In the following years , many of the
original colonists celebrated the autumn crops with a holiday of
thanks. After the United States became an independent
country, Congress introduced one Day of Thanksgiving Day for the
whole nation to celebrate. It’s observed on the 4th Thursday of
November.

First Foot.
There is a funny tradition,
connected with New Year :
the First Foot. This is the first
visitor to enter a house on
New Year’ morning. The First
Foot must be a man because
it is bellieved that if a woman
first sets foot in the house,
bad luck will follow hroughout
the year. The first visitor must
food,drink and coal into the
house. They are symbols of
good luck.
Russian winter festivals.
Maslenitsa
‘Maslenitsa’ is the week
before Lent.
It’s when Russians say
goodbye to winter and
welcome spring. It’s a
time of singing,
dancing and fun. There’s
a lot to eat , too
especially- blinis, which
are delicious butter
pancakes.
Maslenitsa
Children dress up and
play in the snow.
We go for sleigh rides, go
sledging, have snowball
fights and lots more.
We make a straw doll of
‘ Lady Maslenitsa’, who
is dressed in special
clothes. On Sunday
evening, we burn Lady
Maslenitsa on a big
bonfire. The spring
festival is over and Lent
begins.
MASLENITSA
There is an ancient
religious holiday which
is called "Maslenitsa". It
is connected with the
end of winter. It is
celebrated with cooking
lots of pancakes.
People eat pancakes
with caviar and go for
long jolly walks
"gulyanya".
MASLENITSA
After this holiday the great Past begins
so people try to get as much fun as
they can and eat a lot. Many people
nowadays ignore this tradition but still
there are some people who follow it.

How you have made a surprise.
It was my mother `s birthday. In
the morning my parents went
to my Granny. My sister Sveta
and I tidied up our flat. We
decorated it with bows and
ribbons. When our parents
came home and saw it they
were surprised. In front of the
boor there hang a poster
«Happy Birthday, Mother».
We put the candles on the cake
and Mother blew them up. She
was very happy.
I love many holidays especially New Year. Also I
carefully prepare for it, I buy gifts, cards and
other trifles. I like this holiday because I can meet
all people which to me are dear. It is good
occasion to gather all family. I like to receive gifts
and to give their most. I and my younger brother
help mum to cook different tasty food. When all
visitors come we sit down a table. At 24.00 we
usually go to start fireworks. And when all again I
collect behind a table we recollect all good, that
was in the past to year.

Presents
When I was eight my parents made me a surprise. It
was my birthday. In the morning my parents came
to my room to congratulate me. They gave me
presents. There were clothes and toys. I liked them
very much. Of curse I wanted a puppy very much
but I knew they would not give it to me. But

somewhere and returned with a big box. In the
box there was a wonderful puppy. It was a
dachshund. I was really happy. They surprised me

The Snow Maiden
Once upon a time there lived an old woman and an old
man. They had no children. Once in winter they made
a Snow Maiden. The Snow Maiden became alive.
They said that she would be their daughter. She loved
them very much and was a help in their old age. They
were happy. But then the summer came. The Snow
Maiden met a young man and fell in love with him.
He felt the same for her. There was some festival and
Snow Maiden’s girl friends went to jump over a fire.
The Snow Maiden didn’t want to jump because her
parents told her not to, but her friends persuaded her
to do it. Snow Maiden jumped and melted.
