In 1780 the Patriots received major help from the French

Carrying thousands of French troops under
the command of Comte de Rochambeau

Rochambeau joined
forces with Washington
in northern New York
Lafayette had already backed British General Cornwallis
into Yorktown, trapping him on a peninsula
LAFAYETTE
Washington and
Rochambeau
came down from the
north
FRENCH FLEET
The French fleet sailed off the coast, completing the trap
Siege
an attempt to force surrender by blocking the movement of
people or goods into or out of a place
Cornwallis and the British ran low on supplies and in October of
1781 they surrendered

THE TREATY OF PARIS
Terms:

Recognized the United States as an independent
nation
Promised to pay British merchants
what they owed
Agreed to remove all troops from American soil
Return property taken from Loyalists
Gave U.S. fishing rights off coast of Canada
Months after the war ended the Continental Army was still camped in New
York
Many soldiers were unhappy because they believed they were owed back
pay
There was talk of an attack on Congress
Once again showing his leadership skills,
Washington talked to both the soldiers and
Congress and restored calm

In 1783 Washington formally retired and
returned to his home in Mt. Vernon, Virginia
where he planned to live with his family and
oversee his farm.
