EUROSCOLA 2011 Wilson’s Hospital School Sophia Chaffey Catherine Warren THE COMPETITION We were informed in class by Mrs Eager about the competition I had to design a leaflet to inform my peers about The Millennium Development Goals The Prize was a trip to Strasbourg and the European Parliament for 8 students and 1 teacher. PREPARATION Maxine’s Visit Arrangements for our day at Euroscola Committee system and the topics to be discussed Journey to Strasbourg Departed from Dublin at 4pm Arrived at Frankfurt at 6.30pm Bus transfer to Strasbourg and arrived at Ibis hotel at 11pm Meeting the other Schools At the Airport we met students from the other Irish schools at the airport - St. Columba’s College, Dublin and St. Louis High School, Dublin There were also three schools from Northern Ireland representing the U.K. – St. Catherine’s College, Armagh, Down High School, Downpatrick and Victoria College, Belfast EUROSCOLA - Arrival at Louise Weiss We arrived at the Parliament at 9.00am Even though it was very cold we wanted to take lots of photos Dolores found it difficult to get us all inside EUROSCOLA We were given badges and divided into our committee groups We listened to a series of lectures about the functioning of the EU EUROSCOLA Niamh introduced our school in Spanish We were all asked questions about the EU and used the Parliament’s voting system to give our answers EUROSCOLA At all times we were under the watchful eye of Dolores When it was our turn to ask the questions the students from Ireland asked 50% of all the questions asked! EUROSCOLA Of the six committees students from Ireland chaired three – Niamh Faulkner of St. Columba’s College chaired “The place of European Values in the World”, Sophia Chaffey chaired “Environment and Renewable Energies” and Niamh Byrne chaired “Freedom of Information and Active Citizenship” EUROSCOLA After the Committee sessions the final of a Euroquiz was held. Ieva Teiserskyte was on the winning team. We then had a parade of the flags of the participating countries and the European Anthem was played EVENING ENTERTAINMENT After dinner students from Lycée Polyvalent Camille See school in Colmar came to meet us We relaxed and enjoyed the evening STRASBOURG Early on Friday morning we were met by two guides and brought on a tour. Strasbourg is a beautiful city on the river Ill. STRASBOURG The centre of the city has many beautiful halftimbered buildings STRASBOURG One of the highlights of the trip was the Astronomical Clock in the Cathedral After our tour we had time for lunch and some shopping EUROPEAN STUDIES Thank you for such a great trip Thank you Maxine for your help Thank you Dolores for looking after us so well We will remember our day in the European Parliament for a long time Some of us and the friends we made
