Challanges

• Slow adoption of some hygiene and sanitation amenities such as hand washing facilities and drop hole covers by some households

• Collapsing of some latrines due to heavy rains.

• Slow process of certifying of ODF villages by the District

Solutions to Challenges

• Awareness meetings on the significance of hand washing facilities and drop hole covers

• Communities encouraged to form village savings and Loan groups

• Village cross sharing of local experience by households that latrines that have lasted for more than 3 years.

• Discussing with DCT to speed the verification process by appontng a team of extension workers.

Highlights

• Launch of ODF Malawi strategy by 2015 by Government of Malawi in one of Plan Malawi’s ODF village under the Pan African CLTS project.

• 7 villages certified and celebrated ODF status.

• After the TOT in CLTS and SLTS for 59 natural leaders and 29 teachers, 14 villages have been triggered by natural leaders which have attained 100% latrine coverage and 2 schools have already started implementing SLTS.

• Significant child participation during triggering by pointing out OD places which resulted to Match box in agas station and follow ups and monitoring to make sure members adhere to good sanitation and hygine practices.

Lessons Learned

• If villages are well triggered CLTS enhanced social cohension

• Working with natural and community leaders has resulted to speedy adoptation of the approach through effective (door to door) monitoring to ensure that members adhere to the action plan.

• Effective Partnership with Government and other stakeholders at

National and District level ensures enhanced program quality delivery (superiority perfomance, Distinctive impact, sustainability)
