The college was founded in 1881 with a mission to provide the highest level of education of Black women in the South Spelman is a HBCU: Historically Black College/University Location The gated campus is located in the Atlanta University Center (AUC) AUC: • Spelman • Morehouse • Clark-Atlanta University • Morehouse School of Medicine • Interdenominational Theological Center (ITC) Statistics • Enrollment - More than 2100 students from 46 states and 16 countries. • Student-Faculty Ratio -12:1 • 80% of faculty hold PhDs or other terminal degrees (highest degree in a field of study). Statistics • 78% graduation rate. The highest amongst HBCUs • 1st in the nation for sending African-American females to medical school • 77% graduate school/job placement rate.
