Question formation options
• There are three different ways to ask a question in
French:
▫ Statement ?
 Tu parles français?
▫ Est-ce que + statement ?
 Est-ce que tu parles français?
▫ Inversion
 Parles-tu français?

• To make a question using inversion:
1. Locate the verb of your question

Regarder
2. Write the verb, in the right form, followed by a
hyphen

Regardez-
3. Locate the subject of your question

Vous
4. Write the subject after the hyphen


• Write these questions in French using inversion:

• If you want to use a name in your question, it has to
come before the verb.
▫ Valérie est-elle en classe?
▫ Simone et Paulette étudient-elles?
▫ Moi et Claire sommes-nous intelligentes?

• If the subject starts with a vowel (il, elle, & on ONLY),
you need to insert a t between the verb and subject
to preserve the sound IF there is not already a t
sound in the verb.
▫ Parle-t-elle espagnol?
▫ Etudie-t-il l’anglais?
▫ Fait-il attention en classe?
 There is already a t sound at the end of the verb
▫ Joue-t-elle au foot?

the very front of the question.
