Dear chess interested student, In the context of the 400th anniversary of the University of Groningen, a special edition of the Chessfestival Groningen will be held from the 21st to the 30th of December 2014. A special arrangement is offered to chess players of our international partner universities to participate in this years’ tournament. Our Chess-festival Groningen is internationally known as an event where talented players get a platform to acquire a Chess Master or Grandmaster result. Over the years, many chess players showed their talent or started their international careers in Groningen, such as Anatoli Karpov, Viswanathan Anand, Illya Nyzhnyk and Jan Timman. More information about the previous tournaments can be found at www.schaakstadgroningen.nl. The tournament 21st -30th December 2014 This year’s tournament consists of nine rounds. You will play against students from universities all over the world (including Groningen), and other non-student participants. In the end there will be a tournament champion and student champion in each group. You can sign up for the following groups: Open A (ELO>2000) Prize fund: € 6000,Entry fee: € 60,Players with ELO>2400 and holders of the IM and GM title don’t have to pay the entry fee. Open B (ELO 1700-2100) Prize fund: € 1500,Entry fee: € 60, Open C (ELO<1800) Prize fund: € 750,Entry fee: € 60,Compact tournament In addition to the above mentioned tournament, it is possible to join a shorter (‘compact’) tournament for amateurs, which will be held from the 26th to the 30th of December 2014. This tournament consists of 5 rounds and players will be divided in two groups of about 40 players (selected by ELO): Prize fund per group: € 600,First prize per group: € 200,Entry fee: € 35,- Arrangement for participating students from partner universities Your accommodation will be arranged by the University of Groningen (double rooms, separated by sex; full board), as well as the transport costs in Groningen. The travel expenses to come to Groningen are for your own account. You can contact your university to see if they can support you to come to the Netherlands. To holders of the IM and GM title, other conditions can be offered. They can contact the director of the tournament directly, via jancolly@gmail.com. Of course, we will organize an attractive side program for you in the evenings, of which the details will be announced later.
