WHMIS is an acronym for the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System. It is a hazard communication system developed jointly by the federal, provincial, and territorial governments, as well as business and labour. Examples of musculoskeletal injuries include tennis elbow (an inflammation of a tendon in the elbow) and carpal tunnel syndrome (a condition affecting the hand and wrist). Signs are posted inside all classrooms and offices to direct you to the closest exit. If you have a student or colleague with a disability make sure you know how to assist this person to exit the building. Flashing alarms are also installed in key areas of the college to assist hearing impaired staff and students. When the alarm sounds, immediately exit the building in an orderly manner and get away from the building, so that fire trucks can have unimpeded access to the building. Fire Marshals (wearing red baseball caps) are responsible for making sure everyone has exited the building. Students and staff will be allowed back into a building only after the Fire Marshal has declared it safe.
