ELP Parent Partnership
January 2014
The information about the camps in this presentation was
provided by parents at the January 2014 ELP Parent
Partnership meeting. The ELP Parent Partnership is a pilot
program for the 2013-14 school year. The Partnership’s
mission is to create avenues for support, networking,
information and advocacy for high-ability learners and
their families. If you have any questions about the ELP
Parent Partnership or this PowerPoint presentation, please

Most of the camps in the presentation were attended by
students who attend the West Des Moines schools and
who had good experiences at camp. For questions
about the camps, the websites have been provided.
At the end of the presentation, there are some other
opportunities for families of high-ability students as well as
a list of camps for students interested in math and
science.
This is not an exhaustive list of summer options, but rather
a good place to begin your search.



Camp will be held on Drake’s campus – Meredith Hall
Featuring: Critical thinking skills, public speaking skills, communication skills, courtroom
procedures, thorough understanding of Mock Trial, analytical thinking,
extemporaneous argument, lectures by attorneys and law students. Will be using a
civil case this year as practice.
Cost: $140.00 (includes Mock trial t-shirt, notebook, paper, hand-outs, and pizza party).
Application must include a $50.00 deposit – remaining amount is due Registration Day.
WDMCS – SEA
Summer Enrichment Adventures

Two-week course (M-F mornings); a variety of classes offered. Options
change each year. Students may choose up to 2 different classes. 910:25 and 10:30-11:55 slots. Usually taught by WDMCS teachers.


Students are nominated by their school for this program. The Blank Summer Institute for
the Arts & Sciences is a one-week residential summer program for 120 of Iowa’s gifted
students who are currently in grades 7 & 8. The Institute provides exceptionally talented
students with an intensive and advanced educational experience designed to
enhance their intellectual and social growth. Each student selected will receive a $300
Myron and Jacquelin Blank Scholarship to cover a portion of the cost.

Courses offered: Advanced Science, Math Problem Solving, Global and Cultural
Studies, Creative Writing, Invention & Innovation, Visual Arts, Performing Arts.

Students are housed in a residence hall located near the Blanks Honors Center on The
University of Iowa campus. In addition to academic programming, students will be able
to participate in a variety of cultural and recreational activities.

Session is held June 22- June 27, 2014


21,2014. Final selection February 22, 2014. Online acceptance due March 28, 2014.

Program eligibility: Iowa Assessment, samples of student’s work, teacher
recommendations, awards/honors, current grade report, involvement in co-curricular
activities, hobbies and other demonstrated ability and talent in the course areas,
awards or participation in competitions/contests. No real cut-off scores specified – assume that the
entry eligibility is based on a high achieving individual for chosen core.



Students who are currently (academic year 2013-2014) in grades 6-8 may nominate
themselves for the Junior Scholars Institute (JSI), a one-week residential summer
academic program. JSI consists of nine classes. Students take a single advanced level
course for the entire week. Each student selected will receive a $300 scholarship to
cover a portion of the cost of the Institute. Students do not need to be in a talented and
gifted program to nominate themselves.

Courses offered: Project Discovery-Finding your Writer’s Voice, Designing Mobile Apps,
Leadership for Students Who Want to Make a Difference, Animal Behavior, Stop Motion
Animation, Future Cities, An Intro. To Pre-Calculus, Intro. to Engineering.


Our son attended 2-week teen programming academy, University of

Our son LOVED this camp and made fast friends. Every day was an adventure and he
regaled me with stories from class about what he’d learned and what they had
performed/created. Counselors and teachers were kid-friendly and made class and
breaks fun. Good class management, students always engaged.

We chose this atypical option because our son is a perfectionist and sometimes doesn’t
enjoy working with others. 2nd City teaches how to deal with mistakes (there are no
mistakes, only opportunities), work with other people, say “yes AND” to build on each
others’ ideas, etc. A perfect learning situation, especially for a kid that loves performing.

SENG
Supporting Emotional Needs of the Gifted
Most conferences about giftedness focus primarily on educational
issues. While they may include a few presentations about the
social and emotional development and needs of gifted people
and the challenges facing the gifted population, these
presentations play a minor role.
SENG conferences reverse the priorities. They believe that
recognizing, understanding, and accepting the social and
emotional needs of this population are the first priorities for
teachers, parents, and counselors. SENG supports strong gifted
education programs, but believe the emotional piece is the
foundation for the development of healthy, happy, well-adjusted,
