A TRUE STORY
Mattias was about to close the tourist office in Grums when
a German family stepped in. They had come to Sweden for
a canoeing holiday and were soaked to the skin from persistent rain. They looked so miserable and unhappy standing there dripping with water, even their backpacks were
soaking wet. Mattias felt so sorry for them he invited the
whole family home with him to use his washing machine
and tumble dryer. A delighted, dry and happy family were
then able to continue their holiday in greater comfort.

Every summer the municipality with the ‘happy
sun’ invites everyone living in Karlstad and visitors to the area to a free concert at the Sandgrundsudden Cape.
Inger and Lasse Sandberg, the creators of
many well-loved characters in children books,
come from Karlstad.
During the summer you can hire a Solacykel
bike at Stora Torget and cycle along one of
the many cycle paths that take you through
Karlstad.
THE CITY WITH THE HAPPY SUN
Karlstad is the largest city in the county of Värmland. This
naturally makes it a magnet for everyone who is looking for
good shopping, entertainment, culture and major events.
Visitors soon discover that the people of Karlstad are open
and hospitable. We want to make everyone who comes here
feel very welcome.
It is true that most summers we normally find ourselves

high up in the league table of sunshine hours, but our ‘sun’
actually has a historic past that we love telling visitors about.
Eva Lisa Holtz was a waitress in the city towards the end of
the 18th century. She was famous for her happy-go-lucky
nature and became known as ‘Sola i Karlstad’ (the Sun in
Karlstad). You can go and meet her yourself, as her statue
is on the riverside by Stadshotellet.

WATER FUN FOR ALL THE FAMILY
Sundstabadet - Karlstad’s new aquapark is just ten minutes walk from Karlstad City Centre. The attractions here include a waterfall, heated water bubble pool, climbing wall,
outdoor pool with water currents and a children’s area with
several pools featuring figures from children’s book authors
Inger and Lasse Sandberg. There are also two scary water
chutes, the Magic Hole and Black Hole.
And when you have had your fill of aqua fun, you can
recharge your batteries in the café. You can also book a
strength workout or spinning class in the new gym there.

CAFE IN KAFFESKRAPAN
NIGHTLIFE IN KARLSTAD
Karlstad’s very own coffee brand and company, Löfbergs,
has now opened a café on the ground floor of Kaffeskrapan
in Karlstad City Centre Harbour. Rosteriet communicates
the Karlstad company’s passion for coffee and tea, serving
a complete range of blends and roasts from all round the
world.
Nightclubs, pubs, cafes, restaurants – Karlstad boasts a
rich selection of entertainment. Along the whole of Kungsgatan, you will find pubs and bars side by side, where Italian
aromas mix with the smell of juicy hamburgers, and where
people meet to enjoy a well-earned drink with their friends.
The party often continues at the Tempel, Jaguar and Koriander nightclubs.
OUTDOOR CAFES AND RESTAURANTS
PERFECT SHOPPING EXPERIENCE
During the summer months the streets and squares are
bustling with outdoor cafes and restaurants. Karlstad is actually one of the cities with the most outdoor cafes and restaurants in Sweden. There is a wonderful note on the door
to one of the restaurants on the square saying ‘Today we’re
working outside’. Isn’t this everyone’s dream?
The centre of the city is home to many shopping arcades
with well-known chains and charming small boutiques side
by side, making the city centre perfect for a day’s shopping.
The Bergvik and Välsvikens shopping malls and Ikea are not
far from the city, and are ideal places if you want to fill up
your car before heading home.

The River Klarälven is one of the longest in
Europe, stretching 460 km from Härjedalen,
through Norway and down through Värmland
before flowing out into Lake Vänern through
Karlstad.
You can travel between the east and west
coast of Sweden through the River Göta, Lake
Vänern and the Göta Canal.
All the boat buses have wheelchair access.
The largest boat, Omega, has also been adapted for powered wheelchairs.
THE RIVER KLARÄLVEN, LAKES
AND OUR OWN INLAND SEA
Water has a positive effect on people. It was by the water
that the original ironworks grew up, and today all the various
watercourses in the area still affect our day-to-day lives and
the leisure activities we offer.
Karlstad is built on the delta of the River Klarälven, which
has eight branches flowing into Lake Vänern – the largest
lake in Sweden and the third largest in Europe. The elonga-

ted Lake Värmeln in the west was where this whole province
got its name: the land around Lake Värmeln, Värmland.
Lake Vänern has more than 22,000 islands. Many of them
are located in the archipelago outside Karlstad, Hammarö
and Grums. Living a boating life can have its advantages.
You can simply find a rock or a beach to moor your boat. The
fresh water is clean and perfect for swimming.

TRY YOUR LUCK FISHING
If fly-fishing for salmon and trout is your passion, Forshagaforsen is a place you will love. At the Angling Centre there
(Sportfiskecentret) you can swap stories with other anglers,
enjoy a break out of the weather or barbecue your catch.
The salmon here is unique in the world. When the land started to rise after the last ice age, this salmon species was cut
off and started to use the River Klarälven as their spawning
ground instead of Greenland and the Faroe Islands. This is
why they are called ‘Landlocked Atlantic Salmon’.
In Kil, just west of Forshaga, Sweden’s largest lake trolling
competition is held every year. There is also the Gäddfestivalen (Pike Festival), which will take place in September this
year; the winning team is the one that catches the highest
combined weight. If you would prefer to fish without being in
competition with other anglers, you can buy fishing permits
from various locations, including tourist offices.
LEARN MORE ABOUT FLOATING
ARCHIPELAGO MUSEUM
Although floating timber down the River Klarälven came to
an end in 1991, you can relive the memories at the Dyvelsten Flottningsmuseum in Forshaga. Children of all ages are
invited to experiment and play. You can learn and discover
more about the mystical world of the river and the history of
timber floating.
The cultural heritage centre at Hammarö Church is also
home to Skärgårdsmuseet (the Archipelago Museum),
which houses a unique collection of old fishing objects used
in the lake. The boat bus stops right next to it. Hammarsudde is nearby, which is a popular area for rambling and walks,
and has a hiking trail that has been adapted for wheelchair
users.
ROCKS BY THE WATER
LOTS OF BATHING PLACES
At the southern tip of Hammarö, you can have a rest on the
rocks by the Skagen lighthouse and look out over the horizon. Another popular destination is Göteborgsudden in Karlstad, which has wheelchair access. Pack a picnic basket
and go there as soon as you can, you will not regret it.
If you want to bathe in the waters here, not only can we
offer the third largest lake in Europe, we are also home to
Sweden’s longest river. So it’s no surprise that there are so
many bathing places, bays, rocks and sandy beaches to
choose from.
7
Hammarö is one of the largest islands
in Lake Vänern. Not surprising that
people have coined the expression ”The
Archipelago municipality”.
If you are on the River Klarälven south of
the Borgmästarbron bridge in Karlstad,
you can fish for free without a fishing permit.
If you do not get a bite while you are fishing,
you can visit Lillängshamnens Fiskrökeri
which offers salmon, herring and perch.
EXCITEMENT AT SEA
If you arrive in Karlstad by boat, then our marina will
probably be the first thing you see when you come here.
This gives you a good first impression of what we can
offer you during your holiday. Inre Hamn, the harbour area,
welcomes you with the smell of freshly roasted coffee in the
air, and you will see many people from Karlstad who meet
up on the piers around the marina to have a meal or simply
spend time together. Recently Inre Hamn celebrated 150
years and although it is developing as a modern residential
area, history is still all around; just like it is in the rest of the

Karlstad region.
If you do not have your own boat, there are still many ways
for you to get out onto Lake Vänern, River Klarälven and
our many lakes. Take a RIB ride out into the Lake Vänern
archipelago. Feel the wind in your hair as you speed towards
the horizon. Not only will you have a thrilling experience, you
will also have a fascinating tale to take home with you.
Here are some more options if you would like to head out
onto the water. Welcome onboard!

EVERYONE WANTS TO CATCH THE BOAT BUS
When summer arrives, boats join buses as part of the public
transport network. You can just go one stop or travel around
Karlstad and see the city along the beautiful stretches of
the River Klarälven and the charming lock. There are seven
routes and 20 stops, and tickets are exactly the same price
as a normal bus journey.
The boat bus service also offers unforgettable archipelago trips to the islands of Västra Långholmen, Jäverön and
Rävön, where you can hop off if you would like to bathe in
the waters or take a look around. A longer trip is the one
cruising between Karlstad-Hammarö-Kristinehamn.
If you download the waterbus guide app (available for both
Android and iPhone) you can make the most of your trip by
listening to information on the places you are passing and
see exactly where you are in real time on the map. The app
is available in Swedish, English, German and Spanish. The
waterbuses run from June to August in Karlstad, Hammarö
and Kristinehamn.
ENJOY SEAFOOD AT LAKE VÄNERN
CANOEING & KAYAKING
If you love seafood, why not book a prawn cruise across
Lake Vänern on the charming passenger ship the M/S Vestvåg? These popular prawn cruises have now been running
for fifteen years in Karlstad. In addition to prawns, local
dishes from Värmland are also served on board.
Gliding along the water in a canoe or a kayak is a popular
summer adventure for many people. There are several companies in the area that rent out canoes and kayaks. Remember that the River Vänern is strong, so we would recommend
kayaks if you want to go out onto the largest lake in Sweden.
HISTORIC BOAT TRIP ON FREJA
MARINAS
Freja av Fryken is a steamboat that sank in 1896, remaining
at the bottom of the lake for a hundred years before being
salvaged and renovated. Her home dock is Fryksta in Kil
and you can take a guided tour or go on an evening cruise
on Freja through beautiful historic landscapes.
There are several marinas for you to choose from here. These include Lillängshamnen at Hammarö, Karlstad Marina
and the marina in Borgvik, Grums. If you would like more
information about the marinas, please contact the tourist
offices; you can find their contact details on the back.

Imagination and creativity, focusing on colour
and shape, are the hallmarks of Mimmi Design, whose workshop and shop are located in
Pikenberg outside Grums.
The Eiffel Tower in Paris was largely built with
iron ore from Borgvik.
Halla in Forshaga is home to the only genuine
Father Christmas in Värmland, Inge Olson.
There, it is Christmas all year round.
TAKE A CULTURAL JOURNEY
Värmland has a rich cultural heritage. Many of Sweden’s
greatest storytellers throughout history come from this part
of the country. In and around Karlstad you will find many
cultural places recounting our history and offering a wide
range of music, songs and plays.
The Värmland Theatre is presenting a number of theatre
productions for both children and adults in the coming year,
such as Trolltider and the classic Jekyll & Hyde.

On the southern shore of the Fryken lakes you will find
Fryksta Krukmakeri, a pottery works famous for its designs
and practical and ornamental ceramics. You can even try
your hand at a potter’s wheel if you wish.
At Alsters Herrgård, you can learn more about the life and
works of Swedish poet Gustaf Fröding, and enjoy dramatised walks in the delightful grounds.

LOTS OF ACTIVITIES
It makes no difference what time of the year you come to visit us. All year round there are activities for everyone – both
indoors and outdoors. Water and virgin forests characterise
our surroundings and many of the activities that we offer
are based around our Värmländ nature. At Skutberget there
are hiking trails, illuminated ski tracks, barbecue sites, mini
golf and frisbee golf. Spend a few days here before moving

MARIEBERGSSKOGEN CITY PARK
Spend a holiday in the place where the people of Karlstad
come and spend their free time – in Mariebergsskogen (Marieberg Forest), Karlstad’s city park. It is home to the Lillskogen farm animals, playgrounds, a unique play garden, old
historic buildings, a bathing area, mini golf and large green
spaces for picnics. In the winter many people from Karlstad
go ice skating at the child-friendly ice rink in the middle of
the park. If you prefer cross-country skiing, you can take
a tour out around Mariebergsviken. Mariebergsskogen is
open every day throughout the year and it is free to go in.
Mariebergsskogen is also home to Naturum Värmland
which introduces the Värmland nature to people of all ages
in a fun way. You can find all information about our natural
sights at Naturum Värmland, giving visitors more tips to help
them discover the Värmland nature by themselves.

children of all ages can bounce around to their hearts’ content in an inspirational and fun packed indoor play park.
There is also a bowling alley, bar and restaurant for older

30-minute drive from Karlstad. Why not stay for a week and

for you, you can book different golf packages or contact one
of our tourist offices that will help you plan your golfing holiday this summer.
90-KILOMETRE ADVENTURE ON WHEELS

challenge – but a memory to treasure.

when Diggiloo arrive at Dömle Herrgård in
Forshaga with Charlotte Perelli, E-type, Lotta Engberg and others on 13 July.

EVENTS IN OUR PART
OF VÄRMLAND
One of the largest conference and congress centres in
the Nordic region was established in 2010 on the shore
of the River Klarälven in Karlstad, taking inspiration from
the strong storytelling tradition in Värmländ. It holds large
congresses and trade fairs, as well as several major events
throughout the year. It is also home to classical concerts,
dance performances and glittering Christmas concerts.
The area has a long tradition of hosting sporting events,
including the annual Rally Sweden held in Karlstad and

PUTTE I PARKEN FESTIVAL 3-6 JULY
Last year the Putte i Parken music festival was organised
for the fifth year in a row and for the first time in Karlstad.
The Festival was held in Mariebergsskogen Park and proved
a great success. The attendance record was broken and the
visitors were full of praise.
Mariebergsskogen provides the perfect setting for a summer festival with its extensive grassed areas to imbibe the
atmosphere in. It is also close to a great place to swim, Mariebergssviken, and there were play areas in the heart of the
festival area. In other words, a friendly festival that offers
something for everyone.
Performers confirmed at time of printing include Ulf Lundell, Håkan Hellström, Amanda Jenssen and Timo Räisänen.
FRYKSTA WATER FESTIVAL
For the fourteenth year in a row, Fryksta Water Festival will
be held on the southern shore of the Fryken chain of lakes
in Kil. This year’s festival runs from 17-21 July and offers
something for all the family.
What about entertainment, live music, exhibitions, water
sports competitions, water-themed activities to try, restaurant marquee, children’s fairground, bouncy castle and
trips on the classic steamboat Freja.
As the sole Water Festival in Sweden in 2013, the Fryksta festival has also been asked to organise all the larger
powerboat racing championships, including the World,
European, Nordic and Swedish Championships plus a jet
ski invitation event.
