THE VIKINGS RETURN TO VOLGA
Norway is excited to return for a new Universiade experience in Russia. Forty years ago Norway participated with 8 athletes in Moscow, this year the delegation boasts a record 88 athletes in 11 sports. What better way to celebrate a century of Norwegian University
Sports than bringing the largest delegation ever to the Kazan 2013 Summer Universiade!
It is a diverse team that will land at the banks of Volga, from Olympians to FISU first timers. Our athletes have backgrounds from student self-organized university clubs to national teams. But in contrast to the common misconception of Viking pillaging our primary
ambition for the 27th Universiade is not precious metal, but to give our athletes their best sports experience. Rather than taking all
the medals, we hope that the exposure to FISU and the event program will foster further development of our athletes in tune with the
academic sports spirit.
We are certain that the Kazan Universiade will be a lifetime event. Last year’s test events and extraordinary general assembly presented teasers of what athletes and officials are to expect in July. For every visit the organizers have raised the bar. All is set for a fantastic
experience! We are ready to be welcomed in Kazan!

The umbrella organization for sport in Norway. It is the largest volunteering organization in Norway,
with more than 2 million members and 12000 sports clubs. The organisation was founded in 1861.
There are 54 national federations and the Norwegian Association of University Sports is the 14th biggest.

A CENTURY OF STUDENT SPORT: 1913 - 2013
1913: The Norwegian Association of University Sports (NSI) were founded on the 5th of Desember 1913. The first national skiing
championship were held in 1915 and the first in athletics in 1917.
1923: A great propaganda event, celebrating the university sport in Norway, were held in Oslo. Students from all the Norwegian
Universities were present competing and demostrating sports as various as boxing, rowing, shooting, football, gymnastics, fencing and
athletics.
1939: The 6th Academic Winter Games were hosted by NSI and the studentsportsclub NTNUI in Trondheim and Lillehammer. Crown
Prince Olav of Norway were the patron of the games. The Norwegian team became best nation.
1940: Up until the second world war NSI played an important role in the norwegian resistant movement, organizing military training
for students.
1950s-60s: During the fifties there were yearly fencing matches between the University of Oxford and the University of Oslo. Crown
Prince Olav was once again the patron of the games. The Nordic Championships were popular, with students from Sweden, Finland,
Denmark, Iceland and Norway meeting yearly to compete in various sports.
1967: NSI became a member of FISU in October, during the FISU GA in Tokyo.
1980s: A decade dominated by national and nordic championships, educatinal sportsconferences, outdoor activities and the “sports
for all movement” dominated the Norwegian university sport.
1990s: NSI become a member of The Norwegian Olympic Committee in 1996 and EUSA in 1999. NSI together with NTNUI hosted
The 6th and 11th World University Championships in Orienteering in 1988 and 1998.
1999: The first national University Games were held in Trondheim. In 2013 the 6th games were held, once again in Trondheim, with
2300 students competing in 18 different sports.
2011: The Norwegian delegation in the 26th Summer Universiade in Senzhen was the biggest ever with 96 delegates, 65 athlethes
compeeting in 10 sports. In Kazan 2013 the Norwegian delegation is in total 130. 96 athletes compeeting in 11 sports.
