2007 by Carl
Schramm, president
and CEO of the
Kauffman Foundation

Brown. In three short
years, it was expanded
into more than 100
countries by the Public
Forum Institute and

Startup Weekend
• More than 30 cities around the world
are hosting Startup Weekend events
during GEW 2011. Aspiring entrepreneurs
team up at simultaneous events designed to create as many start-ups
as possible.
• Over the course of 54 hours, newly-formed teams in locations such as
Lisbon, Sao Paulo and Sofia present to judges at the Sunday evening
showcase.
• Last year, national winners from across the globe were put to a public
vote to crown the overall Global Startup Battle winner. In 2010 this
was MIMIX at YallaStartup Weekend, Lebanon who won for their
pioneering web and mobile app, which builds on speech recognition
and 3D modelling techniques to translate speech into sign language
in real-time.

GEW 2011 Highlights
Cleantech Open Global Ideas Competition
• The contest is a hunt for the most
promising clean technology ideas
anywhere in the world. One national
winner from more than 20 countries will then
compete during Global Entrepreneurship Week
at the global finals for a chance at $100,000 in support and services.
• Last year, Abeo of Denmark received first prize for their patented
Super-Light Structure technology which minimizes the energy and
materials necessary during building construction.

GEW 2011 Highlights
Your Big Year
• Designed to promote global citizenship
and social responsibility through
entrepreneurship, Your Big Year will attract more than
45,000 entrants from around the world to compete for a
free year-long world tour meeting world leaders,
innovators and inspirational entrepreneurs.
• Last year, the competition brought 24 international
finalists to Liverpool, England, during GEW 2010, via a
series of online challenges won by 30 year old Carielle
Doe, a freelance journalist from NY, USA and 23 year
old Michael Teoh, a youth activist from Malaysia.

GEW 2011 Highlights
Startup Open
• Startup Open is a global
competition to identify and recognize startup companies
founded between GEW 2010 and GEW 2011. The ‘GEW 50’
will be recognized in advance of the Week. One winner will
receive an all-expenses paid trip to Liverpool and VIP
delegate credentials to participate in Global Entrepreneurship
Congress in March, 2012, while another winner will receive a
one-year mentorship from Redbox co-founder, Michael
DeLazzer.
• Last year, Olivier Ceberio, founder of Resolute Marine
Energy, won a free networking trip to Richard Branson’s
Necker Island.
