Biblical basis: (Colossians 2:7) urges believers to be "rooted and built up in Christ, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness." Informal Mentoring: Non-structured, spontaneous, informal; often called "modeling" though not the same; most common; tend to be overlooked and undervalued. Examples: gatherings for information dispatch & discussion; teacher showing students knowledge information; two people gathering often for interest & chatting, etc. Formal Mentoring: structured, facilitated, & formal; commonly used in church (discipleship programs), business & education. Requires: understanding of biblical concept & carrying it out; identifying needs & importance; recruitment of mentors & mentorees; setting up preparations for building up relationships; setting up mentoring agreement with a specific purpose, goal, action steps, target time for completion, resources required, and process of evaluation. Qualities & Role of a Mentor: • Predestined to be conformed to likeness of Jesus (Romans 8:29) • Attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ (Eph.4:13) • Promotion of spiritual, emotional, & social growth - toward goal • Model for mentoree to follow; play key role in God's pattern for growth in mentoree • Help mentoree to reach goals efficiently • Avoid: criticizing; giving advice; casting judgment; rescuing by taking over • Possess skills to focus on and meet mentoree needs • Provides information, knowing things the mentoree does not • Provides wisdom by applying truth and knowing what to do next • Coaches with skills relative to God's plan for mentoree's life • Is a sounding board for asking questions and pre-testing ideas • Is a trusted and respected friend without regard to schedule • Helps devise broad-spectrum plans by giving perspective and advice • Nurtures curiosity, opens doors, and shows possibilities • Willing to take a chance on the mentoree • Can cultivate a relationship based on one another's needs • Has the respect of other Christians and those in the marketplace • Has a network of resources and makes them available • Is consulted by others and is a source of godly and worldly wisdom • Talks and listens, being both teacher and counselor • Has a consistent lifestyle • Is able to diagnose and act on needs, seeing things in perspective • Is biblically literate and skilled in biblical interpretation • Expects and personally acts in terms of co-accountability • Commits only to low-maintenance and light-impact mentorees • Is process- and goal-oriented, being committed to results. Role and Responsibilities of a Mentoree: • Has insight into his/her own needs; is goal-oriented, and seeks challenging assignments and greater responsibilities • Has an early evidence of a sense of purpose, often referred to as vision, mission, or God-given destiny • Has a teachable spirit and puts aside the pride that prevents growth • Demonstrates initiative and is willing to be a doer, not just a hearer of the Word, thereby readily accepting responsibility • Will have open eyes, recognizing that mentors are human and have the responsibility of making the mentoree more dependent on the Lord than on the mentor • Has a servant's heart as it applies to the mentor • Will gradually increase in transparency, as the relationship with the mentor grows; some refer to this as becoming more "like family" • Will not be "high maintenance and low impact" and will have the potential for purpose-related leadership. Benefits of being a mentor: • A close personal relationship with another person, including peer relationship, e.g. friendship between David & Jonathan (1 Sam.18:1); life-onlife relationships esp. among men; keep connected to the younger generation (a younger man often serve as a useful sounding board to bounce ideas off). There is the built-in accountability of answering to a younger man, and serving as his role model. • Personal renewal and revitalization. Mentoring helps younger men mature and older men rejuvenate, as we grow most in the process of helping others grow. At church, we need more interaction between generations. • A sense of self-fulfillment - leaving a heritage to our next generation (Ps.90:12, 16-17. The development of people is not a burden, but a blessing (Ps. 71:17-18). • Enhanced self-esteem - knowing our mentoree is attending to our saying and doing, which could sometimes be intimidating, but also exhilarating. • The confidence of having made a difference with your life. David is not concerned by what he possessed, but "what does God think of me?" (Ps. 71:18). He was not a perfect man, but a purposive man. He knows why he was out on this earth. No wonder he was described as a man after God's heart (1 Sam. 13:14; Acts 13:22). Mentoring is one means of making the move for one's life from success to significance, as it forces a man to think, not about acquisition of material resources, but about the unleashing of spiritual resources to another individual's life, which can make a difference, for now and for eternity. What it is and what it is not: not a talent and not a personality temperament 2. What are they? Biblical examples of these Spiritual gifts; 3. What is the difference between ministry spiritual gifts and edifying spiritual gifts; but it is not a ministry but an empowered ability to edify individuals as well as the Body of Christ Spiritual Gifts 4. Working as a Body of Christ with humility and grace: seek to understand other people’s gifts; seek to look for God’s will and timing and not your own (God centered vs. self-centered) a. How can a mentor help their mentee discern the timing and apply his or her Spiritual gift in ministry and personally? b. How can a mentor complement his/her Spiritual gift with the mentee? Bear in mind that effective communication is listening. Some possible suggestions: • Call him/her up and ask for an appointment to see him/her about a specific issue. • Use a go-between to set up a meeting • Get a referral (networking) • Praise the person on his/her expertise, then ask him/her to use it to help you develop yours. • Offer to join his/her team or project - make yourself useful and learn from him/her • Offer to solve a problem for him/her • Bring him/her an interesting opportunity that you may have, or, bring him/her information in which he/she might be interested, or, ask him/her to read and react something that you have written. • Give him/her periodic update on yourself (occasional phone call or seasonal greeting card etc.) • Wait for the right timing • Pray for a mentor. Ask God to bring men/women into your life who can take you to a higher level of personal and spiritual maturity.
