MARYKNOLL CHAPEL — DESIGN FRAMEWORK & GUIDELINES
Rooted in Faith, Sent in Mission
The Maryknoll Chapel Interior Design Direction establishes a design approach that
expresses faith, contemplation, community, and mission through a warm, natural, and distinctly
Filipino environment. Rather than relying on heavy ornamentation, the chapel is envisioned as
a quiet and welcoming spiritual space where architecture, natural light, materials, and landscape
contribute to a sense of peace and reflection.
The design draws inspiration from earth, greenery, natural wood, and restrained Maryknoll
blue accents to create an atmosphere that is humble, warm, and connected to creation. Filipino
craftsmanship and local materials such as timber, stone, capiz, and woven elements are
incorporated in a subtle manner, allowing the chapel to feel rooted in its Philippine setting
without becoming overly decorative or folkloric.
At the heart of the design is the sanctuary and altar, conceived as the spiritual center of
the chapel. It’s simple and dignified character is supported by natural materials, controlled
lighting, and an uncluttered composition. Beyond worship, the chapel is also envisioned as a
place that brings people together, encouraging connection, reflection, gathering, and
engagement with Maryknoll’s mission of serving communities.
Overall, the interior design seeks to create a chapel that is spiritual yet human, contemporary
yet rooted in place, and simple yet meaningful—where the architecture itself becomes an
expression of faith, creation, Filipino character, community, and mission.
