Battle Plan for Quebec
Setting the stage: The year is 1759. Location is Quebec City. Part of the Seven Years' War, England and
France have been fighting over who will control the New World. Most importantly, who will control what
would become Canada.
Quebec City is the French heart of its territory in the New World. Taking out Quebec City would be
devastating to the ideological heart of the French
forces.
Task: Using the map outline of Quebec, you are
to design a battle plan for the capture OR defence
of Quebec City. You will need to label the
defences and assets of the French and the British,
and use arrows or written labels to explain how
you would defend or attack the city. Note that
before anything happens the…well-labelled
● French occupy the territory on the
northwest side of the St. Lawrence River
● British control most of the river traffic,
and hold Pointe Levis and Ile d’Orleans.
Your map should be well labeled making sure that the following are labeled:
St Lawrence River
St Charles River
Pointe Levis
Coast of Beauport
Falls of Montmorency
Island of Orleans
Each side has the following assets
French Assets (Yellow)
● 3500 soldiers
(commanded by
General
Montcalm)
● 3 sets of
batteries (lines of
heavy mortar
guns)
● Cliffs around the
city
● Lots of cannons
● A few dozen
ships
● Explosives
British Assets (Red)
● 1500 soldiers
(commanded by
General
Bougainville)
● 2000 militia
(untrained
Canadians and
Indigenous
people)
● Trenches along
the river north of
Quebec
● Supplies for a
few months
● 7000 soldiers
(commanded by
Wolfe)
● 500 grenadiers
(some had
explosives plus
rifles)
● 49 battleships
● A dozen or more
provision ships
● Lots of cannons
● A dozen or more
storage vessels
● 1000 Fraser
Highlanders
(rifles and
broadswords)
● 1 set of batteries
(a line of heavy
mortar guns)
● 200 transport
boats (hold 40
men)
● Supplies for a
few months
Once you are done labelling the map, write on a separate piece of paper a brief narrative about how the
battle unfolds. Who will be successful? Why will they be successful? Use evidence and interpretation to
justify your answer.
