ASSIGNMENT 1: The History of Science and Technology in the Philippines: A
Reflection Paper
To live a life in the era of science and technology is truly a privilege. What would
our lives look like right now without science and technology? What would life in the
Philippines be like without smart phones, cars, telecommunications, roads?
Science and technology are one of the important factors of how a country
prospers. Technology plays a significant role, especially in this digital age, in making our
lives easier and better. After seeing the video, it was evident how much the Philippines
changed and improved because of science and technology. Without these technological
advancements our current realities would not be the same and we would still be living in
the prehistoric times.
It was also apparent that technologies from different countries, such as the
Spaniards, Americans, Japanese and more, have a significant influence on our culture
and technology. Examples of these influences are the Spanish building universities and
churches, and the Americans introducing pharmacy and medicine. Once the Philippines
gained independence, multiple presidents contributed in improving our technology, such
as the establishment of the Department of Science and Technology during President
Corazon Aquino’s administration. Despite these scientific and technological
advancements, it is notable that some of the technologies before the Spanish
colonization are still practiced and seen today, such as herbal medicines and the
Banaue Rice Terraces, as it is a part of our culture and heritage.
Science and technology are one of the important factors of how a country
prospers. Technology plays a significant role, especially in this digital age, in making our
lives easier and better. To be part of this technological and scientific age is truly a
privilege.
