Video Transcript
[Three coworkers, Shira, an older Black woman with twisted, natural hair pulled back, wearing glasses, is a
senior manager. Greta is a young, blond, white woman wearing a white-collared shirt and tan sweater vest,
and Jae is a middle-aged Indian man with glasses.]
Greta asks Jae: And you're going to handle that, right?
Jae responds: Yup. On Monday.
Shira says: Okay, we need to write two more sections, review and tighten it up, then design and format for
final publication. We’re looking at maybe 5 hours to finish. It'll be a late night, but we can power through.
Greta replies: I only have an hour until I have to leave.
Shira is startled by this, asking: What? Why?
Greta: I have rehearsal. Tuesdays and Thursdays at 5 p.m. Remember?
Shira is perturbed. She says: Greta, we’ve been really accommodating with your rehearsal schedule, letting
you leave early when you need to. You knew we had this big deadline. Last week I told both of you to clear
your calendars. This is a big deal for the company, and it’s due tomorrow.
Greta isn’t fazed. She says: I’m sorry. We open next week.
Shira is almost dismissive, saying: I’m sure they’ll understand if you miss one rehearsal.
Greta doesn’t budge, saying: I can't. They need me there.
Shira is getting more upset and replies: Well, we need you here, too. Why didn’t you tell me you couldn’t
stay late?
Greta finally buckles under the pressure, saying: Because it was presumptuous. I have a work/life balance,
and I’m not going to feel badly about that.
[She looks at Shira who is glaring at her.]
Greta continues: Just because YOU always work after hours doesn't mean “I” have to.
Shira: It’s not just about you. Your actions affect Jae and me. It’s rude!
[Greta closes her laptop, gathers her things, stands and as she exits says, angrily: What’s rude is telling me
that wanting a work/life balance is a problem.]
