1. The table made by Webb was a part of the Arts and Crafts Movement, a movement
made to combat the cheapness of industrialization of design, and return to the past
styles of handmade crafts. Therefore, this table was made by hand, by specialized
artisans. The Wassily chair was made by Breuer and was a part of the Bauhaus
movement. This chair was made to be functional and was stripped of all the unnecessary
details and designs. They both have some overlap because they were both made to
combat the current societal norms at the time.
2. Webb's design in particular was made mainly with form in mind; he was trying to show
how handmade furniture cannot be recreated by industrial means. Conversely, Breuer’s
design was made to be functional and mass-produced, so he could protest materialism.
Nowadays, form and function in our society are closely intertwined. Consumers want
things that are functional but also beautiful, causing designers to have to get more
creative to keep up with this demand. This shows how evolved our current values have
become; we want the best of both worlds, and we want the best product that implements
those values.
3. I do not think that it is fair not to classify furniture as fine art. Furniture can be very
beautiful, and is very tedious to create. The creation of furniture is also a self-expression
from the creator; therefore, I think that it has its place in art museums.
