TOWARDS SUSTAINABLE COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT IN SOUTH AFRICA
Development efforts need to work at the grassroots level to find the most appropriate
strategy that provides social, economic, and environmental benefits to the local
community. By drawing from the theories of community development, the purpose of this
article is to critically analyse the role of South African local government administration in
the promotion of sustainable community development. This article argues the need for
enabling conditions for local government administration to maintain their commitment to
sustainable community development. To that end, the article will address issues, such
as: the theories of community development; the need for sustainable community
development; the decentralisation in political and administrative responsibilities; the
support and advocacy of community participation in development by local government;
and the local level sustainable community development strategies in South Africa.
