Rivalry among Competing sellers - Moderate - People's demand for beer has tended to increase slowly in recent years. Due to the impact of the Covid-19 epidemic and the Government's Decree 100, they tend to use other healthy products to drink. beer substitute - Beer prices between brands such as Heineken, Budweiser, and Habeco have clear differences, in which Heineken beer is the most expensive. This makes the cost of switching brands relatively high - Despite the variety of types, the products of industry members have few differences, making it not difficult for everyday consumers to switch to other types - For many years, the beer market has been dominated by four major beer groups: Heineken, Sabeco, Carlsberg, and Habeco. By 2021, these four companies accounted for 94.4% of the Vietnamese beer market, with Heineken and Sabeco having a market share of 78.3%, surpassing the other two companies. Other companies have a small market share and lower competitiveness 2. Firms in Other industries offering substitute products - High - Observing the impact of Decree 100 (imposing penalties on individuals who consume alcohol while participating in traffic) shows that the number of visitors to restaurants has decreased significantly and people tend to switch to other types of drinks such as spring water, carbonated water, non-alcoholic drinks. - After the COVID-19 pandemic, people tend to prioritize their health more. This has led to a significant increase in the demand for substitute products. - The prices of alternative products such as soft drinks and fruit juices are cheaper than beer. For example, in Vietnam today, 1 barrel of Tiger beer costs 400,000 VND/barrel, while the price of 1 barrel of Pepsi is only 178,000 VND/barrel. - Beverage manufacturing businesses have launched many healthy product lines such as nutritious, cooling fruit drinks, coffee-flavored drinks, etc., with diverse packaging and designs. Especially made from environmentally friendly materials that can be completely recycled Downloaded by Ánh Chu (chuthianh114@gmail.com) lOMoARcPSD|62214503 3. Điều này làm chi phí chuyển đổi brands tương đối cao - With the development of social networks and direct channels, consumers in Vietnam can interact directly with beer brands. They are well-inform about the ingredients, quality, prices of these brands. - Consumers in Vietnam are often quite sensitive to price. They often choose reasonably priced products and keep an eye out for offers and discounts. This puts pressure on brewers to maintain competitive prices and offer incentives to attract customers. 4. Suppliers bargaining power - Moderate to High - According to data from the Vietnam Beer - Alcohol - Beverage Association (VBA), some of Vietnam's largest beer manufacturers (Heineken, Carlsberg, Habeco and Saigon Beer) account for about 80% of the industry market share. This concentration gives large suppliers, such as suppliers of barley, hops and aluminum cans, more leverage to negotiate prices and terms. - Main raw materials and equipment such as barley malt, Houblon flowers, high-tech production line systems, etc. are especially important but most of them have to be imported from abroad ⇒ Causing a great pressure with domestic beer production enterprises for a number of reasons such as not being able to control prices. - Although some large brewers have undertaken some backward integration (e.g. barley production), the majority of Vietnamese breweries rely heavily on external suppliers for inputs. main entry. According to VBA, the proportion of domestic barley used in Vietnamese beer production is only about 30%. - The cost of switching suppliers is relatively high because the process requires significant investments in new equipment, training and quality control measures of incoming materials and equipment. Several factors weaken the bargaining power of suppliers in the beer industry in Vietnam - Although the Vietnamese beer industry is significant for some suppliers, large brewers such as Heineken and Saigon Beer are still able to negotiate favorable terms due to their large purchasing volumes. According to VBA, the 5 largest beer producers in Vietnam account for about 80% of total beer production. - While there is no perfect replacement for some specialized barley varieties or unique brewing technologies, alternative sources of supply for other key inputs such as aluminum cans and rice do exist. For example, brewers may use rice to replace barley in some beers. - Currently, there are a number of large beer factories in Vietnam that now have their own barley factories, helping them reduce dependence on outside suppliers as well as reduce input costs ⇒ Reduces bargaining power of suppliers. ⇒ Although the Vietnamese beer industry exhibits several factors that increase suppliers' bargaining power, these factors are offset by other factors that weaken it. The level of bargaining power of a supplier can generally be considered moderate, with variability depending on the particular supplier and its market share. 5. Potential new entrants - Low The risk of new companies entering the beer industry is considered low due to the larger scale of existing beer industry businesses and enjoying a significant proportion of the industry's high profits. The beer business faces expensive plantbased startups that focus on quality, cost and legal issues. This also becomes a barrier to market entry due to high prices. Rivalry among Competing sellers: High - The apparel industry is highly competitive, with numerous brands vying for market share. This includes fast fashion giants like H&M and Zara, Gap and Levi's, and niche brands catering to specific styles or demographics. It can be challenging to maintain engagement with consumers given the industry's modest expansion and consumers' ease of switching brands. - The clothing industry is highly fragmented, with a wide range of brands competing for market share. This leads to intense competition on price, design, marketing, and distribution channels. 2. Substitute: Moderate - The clothing industry faces a moderate threat from substitute products. Substitutes include alternative clothing options such as second-hand apparel, rental services, and online marketplaces for pre-owned clothing. - Mua sắm online cũng là 1 trong những mối đe dọa from substitute of clothing industry, khách hàng có nhiều sự lựa chọn về giá cả, mẫu mã hơn vì vậy buyers have low costs in switching to substitutes. However, - New clothing still holds significant value: Many consumers prioritize brand new clothing for its perceived quality, fit, and social status. The emotional connection to new purchases is also a factor. - Not all segments are equally affected: Higher-end clothing segments may face less pressure from substitutes due to their focus on exclusivity and prestige. - Brands can adapt: By focusing on unique value propositions, sustainability, and brand loyalty, clothing brands can mitigate the threat of substitutes. 3. Bargaining power of buyers: High - Consumers have a wide range of options when it comes to purchasing fashion products, both online and offline. This gives buyers the ability to shop around for the best deals, compare prices, and make more informed purchasing decisions. Additionally, the rise of social media has made it easier for consumers to share information about products and pricing, which has further increased the bargaining power of buyers. ⇒ Buyers have low costs in switching to substitutes and they are well informed about the quality, prices and cost of sellers ⇒ High 4. Suppliers: 5. Potential new entrants: Low - High capital requirements: Opening a physical store or launching an online fashion retail platform requires significant upfront investment in inventory, marketing, and infrastructure. This can be a barrier for many potential entrants. - Brand recognition and loyalty: Established brands have strong customer recognition and loyalty, making it difficult for new players to compete and gain market share. - Economies of scale: Established brands often benefit from economies of scale, allowing them to negotiate better prices with suppliers and enjoy lower production costs. This can be difficult for new entrants to match. - Complex supply chains: The fashion industry has complex and intricate supply chains, involving sourcing materials, production, and logistics. Firms in Other industries offering substitute products - Low - The main kind of substitute could be if a telecommunication company comes up with a unique selling proposition that is completely different from the ones existing in the country. This industry requires the company to be customercentric ad service-oriented rather than being product-oriented. - The cost of switching in this industry is very low. The switching cost would mainly include breaking a contract and an activation fee. - Today the number of users of television, radio is comparatively less, and people are mostly using phones and the internet as the main mode of communication. For internet and telephony, there is no alternative, and threat from substitutes is low. - Existing services in the telecommunication sector cannot be substituted by any other services easily. Telecommunications equipment and software are very sophisticated and complex, with no substitutes, so it seems that the company will be in a passive position when having to depend on suppliers. - Due to the specific nature of electronic components and equipment, there are no good substitutes for what the suppliers provide. - Because Industry members mainly provide telecommunications products such as Internet, telephone..., they do not have the potential to integrate backward in order to self-manufacture their own inputs. - In Vietnam today, there are many companies providing telecommunications equipment and software both domestically and internationally. Rivalry among Competing sellers - High - In the Vietnamese coffee industry, current competitors are mainly large enterprises such as Highlands Coffee, Starbucks, The Coffee House, etc. These enterprises have large scale, strong financial capabilities, and extensive experience in the industry, creating significant competitive pressure for small businesses newly entering the market. - Competitors in the coffee industry always exert substantial pressure on each other through distinct strategies aimed at attracting customers. For example: + Starbucks Vietnam's strategy involves opening outlets in prime locations with modern designs, emphasizing on providing a experiential space for customers. Starbucks uses premium pricing to create differentiation and strengthen the brand image. Starbucks also consistently introduces new seasonal products each month to keep customers engaged. + Highlands Coffee focuses on selling familiar products, such as iced milk coffee and drip coffee, with prices targeting the mass market, the common people. In addition, Highlands Coffee stores are designed to be close to nature, reflecting the Vietnamese culture. - In general, the market always welcomes new businesses, adding to the already intense competition in an inherently challenging industry. 2. Firms in Other industries offering substitute products - High Downloaded by Ánh Chu (chuthianh114@gmail.com) lOMoARcPSD|62214503 - The demand for beverages among the population is changing, with fewer people choosing industrial coffee as their daily drink. + Elderly Individuals: ● Caffeine, a stimulant, can cause side effects such as anxiety, dizziness, insomnia, and increased blood pressure. These side effects can become more severe in the elderly. ● Some elderly individuals have health issues that prevent them from consuming coffee. For example, those with heart problems, high blood pressure, or osteoporosis should limit or avoid coffee consumption. ⇒ Older adults tend to prefer tea to improve sleep; additionally, they prefer fruit-infused water to supplement vitamins and minerals for disease prevention. + Younger Individuals: ● They often choose to drink milk tea, which is considered a beverage that helps relieve stress and tension. ● In addition, they prefer the street experience, often opting for roadside lemon tea. - The population has a habit of making drinks at home, reducing the habit of consuming coffee outside. + People are increasingly concerned about health and quality of life. They want to use natural, healthy products with fewer preservatives and additives. Therefore, making drinks at home using fresh and safe ingredients is a prioritized choice. ⇒ Factors affecting competition from substitute products are high. 3. Buyers - Moderate - The low conversion cost between various types of drinks makes it easy for customers to replace beverages from these famous brands with drinks from other brands. - In addition, customers can choose bottled drinks from vending machines or nearby locations when they want to quickly satisfy their thirst. Therefore, these factors can reduce market share and total revenue for industrial coffee shops. - Current well-known industrial coffee brands cater to diverse customer groups. They are sensitive to quality and are willing to pay a higher price for guaranteed quality products. However, these brands cannot sell at excessively high prices because customers will start comparing and opting for other brands that are cheaper but maintain a similar level of quality. ⇒ Factors affecting the power of buyers are moderate. 4. Suppliers - Low - With their large global scale, renowned industrial coffee brands have specific policies for selecting suppliers based on the brand's requirements. - Finding reliable and high-quality sources is a top criterion for these brands. Therefore, they import standardized coffee from reputable places around the world. + For example, Starbucks directly collaborates and develops partnerships with coffee farmers, ensuring a clear origin for its coffee beans. This allows Starbucks to have strict control and management over its supply chain. - Industrial coffee brands often bypass intermediary models and begin to source directly from coffee farmers, thereby gaining significant influence over suppliers. In addition, these brands develop relationships with tea and cocoa farmers, providing assistance and training to improve cultivation methods for maximum profitability. ⇒ All of these factors have reduced the impact on negotiating power and limited the price bargaining situation for the supply of raw materials. ⇒ Factors affecting the bargaining power of suppliers are low. 5. Potential new entrants - Moderate - The competitive ability of new coffee brands is only at moderate level. + Currently, the barriers to entry and the initial investment required to establish a coffee brand are not excessively high. Along with that, the saturation level in the industry is moderately high. Therefore, new entrants can only compete with brands like Starbucks or Highlands at the local level. - Renowned industrial coffee brands such as Highlands Coffee, Starbucks, The Coffee House, etc., have captured a significant market share and upscale customers due to their infrastructure, product quality, and service. They have a strong financial foundation, the ability to access high-quality coffee, and ownership of a larger share of reputable global suppliers. ⇒ These factors contribute to controlling the pressure of new businesses entering the coffee industry, making it negligible. 2. NGÀNH FAST FOOD (UK) Yếu tố Mức độ Rivalry among Competing sellers high Firms in Other industries offering substitute products high Downloaded by Ánh Chu (chuthianh114@gmail.com) lOMoARcPSD|62214503 Buyers high Suppliers low Potential new entrants moderate 1. Rivalry among Competing sellers (High) This force determines how competitive and profitable an industry is. The level of rivalry depends on determinants such as costs, concentration in the industry, industry growth rate, differentiation and switching costs. 1.1. Costs: In the case of the fast food industry, fixed cost is high and switching cost is low therefore rivalry could increase. Additionally, high fixed costs encourage fast food stores to lower prices. Therefore, competition will intensify as prices decrease. 1.2. Concentration in the industry. The fast food environment is competitive as the industry is perfect competition due to low product differentiation amongst rivals, therefore, competition is high. Moreover, the high number of rivals in the industry also determines the high level of competition as each firm is trying to lure and target the same customers. In this case, in 2018 there are over 56,000 fast food restaurants in the United Kingdom, which is worth almost £15 billion, 1.3. Industry growth rate. Industry growth is rapid, the rivalry intensity will be less between rivals. However, if the growth rate is slow, the intensity increase. In the United Kingdom the growth rate of the fast food industry is slow as the market is saturated. In addition, competition is rife in the fast food industry, with non-specialists such as supermarkets, focusing on sales volume and market share. Hence, growth has been moderate from 4.4% in 2015% to 2.7% in 2019 due to the industry facing tough competition from non-specialists that are playing with prices and convenience. 1.4. Differentiation. Fast food industry is a perfect competition market as firms compete with low product differentiation. Fast food outlets will be competing for the same target market, hence rivalry is intense. For instance, the competition is high between McDonalds and Burger King as the products are identical and both restaurants target the same consumers. Furthermore, brand power creates the most competition in the fast food industry. For instance, McDonald’s spends hundreds of millions of dollars on advertising its brand globally. 1.5. Low barriers to exiting. There are no high exit barriers because it is easy to close restaurants with relatively low fixed costs. => Overall, the determinants of high competition as mentioned, high number of firms selling similar products and low switching costs. Therefore, this situation is a disadvantage to the fast food industry. 2. Firms in Other industries offering substitute products (High) The threat of substitutes in the fast food industry is high due to the determinants. In the UK for instance, there is threat of substitution as the government introduced a proposal in 2018 to cut calorie intake to half the rates of childhood obesity by 2030. Therefore, fast food consumers may switch their eating habits due to being health conscious. Plus eating healthy at a fast food restaurant could be more costly than eating unhealthily. Hence, some consumers have stopped eating out due to the financial situation. This is proven as the consumers who are financially ‘OK’ to afford to eat out in 2018 were 93% however it slightly decreased in 2019 by 2%. Nonetheless, as mentioned above there are numerous established firms where a consumer can easily switch due to zero sum of switching. 3. Buyers (High) The fast food industry bargaining power of customers of the fast food restaurants is high due to few determinants. Mainly, low switching costs give the ease to the customers to change from one restaurant to another, therefore, consumers can easily impose demands such as force to reduce price, increase quality or services. Therefore, buyers are price sensitive. As mentioned above, consumers' financial situations in the UK also add buyers being price sensitive. In 2019, consumers of fast food in the UK cut out on eating fast food, as they cannot afford the additional expense. In addition, as mentioned above the fast food industry is saturated, hence buyers have high bargaining power in an industry with many competitors. Therefore, availability of numerous substitutes adds to the bargaining power of consumers. => It advisable for the outlets in the fast food industry to develop strategies to increase customer loyalty as it could prevent consumers from switching therefore, this could help reduce power of buyers 4. Suppliers (Low) There is a significant number of suppliers relative to buyers in the fast-food industry (CFI, 2020). As the key suppliers for the fast food industry are dough, meat, vegetable vendors etc. Therefore, supplier power is low as there are other existing suppliers to supply these products. To be precise, in fast food outlets, the number of sellers for different raw materials of Downloaded by Ánh Chu (chuthianh114@gmail.com) lOMoARcPSD|62214503 fast food are high. Hence, gives fast-food outlets to easily switch suppliers at a low cost. Moreover, having a high number of suppliers for fast food chains improves its bargaining power and puts the fast-food outlet in a dominating position. Additionally, supplier power is low as there is a significant amount of suppliers in the fast-food industry, hence switching costs are low for buyers. For example, McDonald has thousands of suppliers to choose from and through a competitive bid process. Therefore, McDonalds switching costs are low. Therefore, it could be concluded low bargaining power of supplier is an advantage to the fast food outlets as the supplier’s lack product differentiation among the suppliers and numerous existences of suppliers 5. Potential new entrants (Moderate) The threat of new entrants is moderate in the fast food industry due to barriers. Firstly, capital requirements may be moderate or low to become an established firm in the fast food industry, however to achieve economies of scale as new entrants it is difficult as they are entering the industry with low market share and are forced to accept high fixed costs. Therefore, in most cases new entrants may be discouraged to enter as the global fast food industry is dominated by numerous international Quick Service Restaurant Chains such as McDonalds, KFC, Burger King and Pizza Hut. Secondly, new entrants have the capital to heavily invest on advertising and promotion to create brand awareness as the fast food industry products are undifferentiated and the established firms possess the advantages of brand recognition and customer loyalty. Therefore, new entrants may struggle to compete with incumbent firms. Thirdly, established chains as mentioned above, have capital to retaliate aggressively price cutting deterring new players from entering the marketplace. Therefore, new entrants may enter less visible markets to avoid retaliation. Lastly, new entrants may experience high costs of research for a reliable and suitable supplier as the established firms have close and long relationships because fast food restaurants are judged by their supplier, therefore, a well known supplier is a sign of good quality food. However, for new entrants to find and create a good distribution channel may require capital. => Overall, the threat of new entrants entering the fast food industry is moderate as the initial capital and fixed costs are low. Hence, it encourages new entrants to enter but must be financially stable to introduce unique products to gain economies of scale. => In conclusion, it could be concluded from the analysis above that there is a high level of competitiveness and low level of attractiveness for the fast-food industry. Fast food outlets could go out of business if they are unable to create unique products or spend money advertising or develop a reputation. Downloaded by Ánh Chu (chuthianh114@gmail.com)
