The Amazing Journey from
Seed to Plant
1
Find out what seed
germination is
2
Explain how bean
plants grow and
change through
each stage
3
Identify the
conditions that
seeds need to
germinate
With a partner, think about these questions.
• What do you think ho a seed grows?
• What magical things that can help a seed to grow and develop a plant?
• What would be the first thing a seed do - grow up or grow down?

A plant begins its life as a
small seed and grows into a
plant. Each stage helps the
plant grow and create seeds
to start the cycle again.

Germination is when a seed
wakes up and begins to grow
into a new plant. The tiny root
breaks through the seed coat
first, followed by the shoot that
grows upward toward the light

Seeds need THREE important
things to start growing:
1.
Water - Softens the seed coat
and activates growth
2.
Oxygen - For the seed to
breathe and release energy
3. Warmth - The right
temperature helps enzymes work

The life of a bean plant starts
with a bean seed. The seed is
planted in soil and needs
water, warmth, and sunlight to
sprout. Inside the seed is a
tiny plant waiting to grow.
When the seed starts to grow,
seed coat splits - The coat
breaks and open. It uses
sunlight, water, and nutrients
from the soil to grow stronger.
Root emerges - The radicle
(first root) grows downward
Shoot appears - The plumule (first
shoot) grows upward
Leaves unfold - The seedling can
now make its own food
• Growing our food - All crops start from seeds
• New plant life - Keeps plant species alive
• Feeding the world - Without germination, no plants = no food!
• Biodiversity - Helps maintain different plant species on Earth
There are many
types of beans,
including green
beans, kidney beans,
and black beans.
Beans are packed
with protein, making
them a nutritious
part of diets around
the world.
Some bean plants
can fix nitrogen in
the soil, helping
other plants grow.
Bean plants can
stay as small bush
plants.
